We love growing things at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, including benefits for our members. That’s why we’re partnering with Nudge, a company with strong local ties, to give members a fun and positive way to help feel healthier.

Nudge is an app that can be used on a mobile device or personal computer to track healthy lifestyle choices. Staff at the Garden have been testing it  for the past month, and we’ve liked what we’ve seen. Tracking exercise, eating, sleeping and water intake has helped me focus more on my health. Friendly competition, and learning what sort of workouts my coworkers enjoy has allowed me to get to know them better, and encouraged me to make healthier choices (at least when they are around!).
I’ve been so impressed with my coworkers! Who knew that Steve, Garden Shop Assistant, was such a workout aficionado, doing cardio, elliptical and a fitness class all in one week — and leading the Nudge Lewis Ginter Club Leaderboard?  Or that Heather, Children’s Garden Horticulturist, does 180 minutes of “Yard Work” every day. Wait! I think we did know that. We just call it gardening.  Of course  gardening is great exercise and gardening is what we do! That’s one of the many reasons why this partnership is a great fit.   Plus I love giving my coworkers “High Fives” when they do something great.  Fitness is really important to the Garden — staying active and fit is part of our culture.

Did you know we offer morning and evening yoga and Tai Chi at the Garden? Some other botanical gardens have also had great success with walking clubs. Would you be interested in a walking club here at the Garden?  Walking is a great walk to relieve stress, boost energy, improve health and walking with friends (or soon to be friends) makes you more likely to show up.  Did you know that it is roughly .25 miles from Visitor’s Center to Bloemendaal House or Children’s Garden? Chances are, every time you come to the Garden you walk  at least a mile!

We hope that you join Nudge and that you join the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden club on Nudge. I can’t wait to give you, our blog readers, a “High Five” when you do!
