Floral Design Classes

Learn the art of floral design and flower arranging through hands-on workshops and demonstrations. Courses include traditional and modern styles of floral art and instruction in a variety of settings, ranging from step-by-step classes to sophisticated workshops and programs.

Classes are offered in-person, as synchronous (live) online programs, or using hybrid methods with both in-person and virtual content. Class delivery methods are denoted next to each listing as VIRTUAL, IN-PERSON, or HYBRID.

NEW! Mother’s Day Workshop: 3D Dried Flower Centerpiece | May 12 IN-PERSON

Join us on Mother’s Day for an adult (18+) mother-daughter workshop with Designer Conner Parrish of Blossoming Roots Flower Farm! Mother-daughter pairs will have the chance to create a three-dimensional centerpiece with dried flowers that can be used as home decor or a statement wreath. Mother-daughter pairs will have the option upon registration to sign up to make one centerpiece together, or individually create two separate centerpieces while sitting together at the workshop.


NEW! Cultivating a Cut Flower Garden | May 24 | IN-PERSON

Whether you have a big backyard, a tiny patio with containers, or something in between, this workshop is designed to give you the skills that you need to begin and maintain a successful cut flower garden. Floral designer Claire Smith will start by highlighting the fundamentals of creating a cut flower garden. Then, you’ll sink your hands into some potting soil to sow seeds of cut flower favorites, which you’ll be able to take home and transplant in your own garden!


NEW! Spring Floral Tablescape | May 31 | IN-PERSON

Design a fresh floral tablescape to adorn your dining room table with designer Betty Ann Galway. While having fun designing, you will learn principles and elements of floral design, gaining an understanding of why components are chosen and how their placement creates a pleasing design. Betty Ann will share “tricks of the trade,” so you learn how to set any arrangement up for success in stability and longevity. 


Basic Floral Design, Part 1 | July 9, 16, 23, 30, August 6 | IN-PERSON 

Learn how to create the basic shapes and styles of floral designs—the building blocks for true creativity—with floral designer Mimi Cassick. This course will introduce you to techniques and styles commonly used by professionals. Learn preparation techniques, how to create basic shapes and how to prepare flowers for long-lasting arrangements.


NEW! Victorian Splendor | July 10 | IN-PERSON

During the Victorian era, flower arranging was taught and recognized as an art in Western culture, making it an important period in the history of floral design. Join floral designer David Pippin for a workshop that will combine history with hands-on floral arranging as you explore the history of floral design in the Victorian era. Create and take home a Victorian style centerpiece using a variety of cut flowers and foliage that would have been popular during that period.


NEW! Exploring Virginia-Grown Flowers with River City Flower Exchange | July 25 | IN-PERSON at River City Flower Exchange

Fall in love with Virginia-grown flowers this summer! Join Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden as we go on the road for an exclusive opportunity to tour River City Flower Exchange, Central Virginia’s first all local flower market. You’ll meet local growers, learn all the secrets about Virginia-grown flowers, and have an opportunity to purchase sustainably-grown local blooms at the market. Explore for yourself why the beauty of Virginia-grown flowers is the best beauty for you and your world. You’ll learn about the US domestic cut flower industry and its ecological impact, why using local flowers in your designs is more sustainable, information about seasonal selection and how to substitute Virginia-grown flowers for imports, and much more!


Basic Floral Design, Part 2 | August 13, 20, 27, September 3, 10 | IN-PERSON

In this course, participants will explore the elements and principles of design and floral techniques such as focal area, grouping and basing with floral designer Mimi Cassick. In each step-by-step class, you will create designs including an asymmetrical design, a contemporary spray, a crescent-shaped design, a horizontal centerpiece and a naturalistic landscape design.
