Cole Crop Capstone

Planting is now complete for the 2012 Lewis Ginter Community Kitchen Garden cole crops. A diverse and energetic group of volunteers came to the garden on Saturday, September 22 and completed the planting of broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
September 1 marked the first day of planting the cole crops (Brassicas) – two weeks earlier than last year – and planting took three weeks. That’s because the 2012 count of plants is overall much larger than last year (2011 counts shown in parentheses): Cabbage 255 (45), Cauliflower 306 (125), Broccoli 280 (250). That’s because we hope to double the year-over-year fall yield from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds – all to assist FeedMore’s feeding programs.
2012 Community Kitchen Garden year-to-date production is 9,543 lbs.
