Orchid Immersion Day

Calling all orchid enthusiasts! Spend a day with Tom Purviance and John Salventi, former owners of Parkside Orchids, to learn what makes an orchid an orchid, orchid culture and care, how to grow orchids under lights, how and when to repot, plus more. Bring an orchid for evaluation by John and Tom. Purchase an orchid from John and Tom or from the Virginia Orchid Society. Visit the Garden's winter orchid display in the Conservatory. Morning coffee and lunch are included.

1 session = 6.5 hrs.  GES: HL, 4, elective.  $86 / $75 for members.

Schedule for the day:

8:30 am:   Registration, Morning Coffee

9 am:         Introduction: The history of orchid collecting. What makes an orchid an orchid?
                   The rise in popularity of orchids and their production in today’s horticultural world.

10 am:      Morning Break.  Virginia Orchid Society sale opens.

10:15 am: Introduction to Orchid Culture and a review of the most popular orchids available today.

11:15 am: Orchid evaluation and questions. Bring an orchid plant for evaluation by the presenters.
                   These plants will be discussed in front of the workshop for the benefit of all.

12 noon:   Lunch Break (included with registration)
                   Virginia Orchid Society Sale, Robins Visitors Center
                   Select plants available for sale by John and Tom in the Education Building

12:45pm:  Repotting Orchids: An in depth discussion and demonstration about the techniques for
                    repotting most orchid types.

2 pm: Breakout Sessions:
Choose one of the following lectures.

1. Growing Orchids under Artificial Lights

2. Understanding water quality and fertilization of orchids.

3 pm:       Afternoon Break

3:15 pm  Travelogue of orchid trips to South America and the largest international shows in
                 Tokyo and Taipei. Virginia Orchid Society sale closes.

4:15 – 5 pm Final questions and discussion
