Beauties of the Past, Still Blooming: The LivingTreasures of the Hortus Bulborum
Tues., Oct. 6, 4 - 5:30 pm
Tuesday, October 6, 4 - 5:30 pm (light refreshments: 4-4:30 pm, lecture: 4:30 - 5:30 pm)
Tulips and other flowering bulbs fascinated 16th and 17th century Holland: great painters pictured them, and collectors avidly pursued them. But, the flowers that bewitched those early collectors are not seen today, except at Hortus Bulborum, the unique garden museum of historical spring bulbs in Limmen, Netherlands, specializing in antique forms and varieties that are no longer commercially produced. Enjoy light refreshments on the terrace of the Robins Visitors Center, then relive the colorful history of these spring favorites, illustrated with pictures of living heirloom bulbs—some dating to the 16th century—a rare feat of plant preservation made possible by the work of the Hortus Bulborum. The Hortus preserves varieties of tulips, narcissus, crocus, hyacinth, and fritillaria that have become extinct in commercial operations. Lecturer Leslie Leijenhorst is public relations manager for the Hortus Bulborum and is the author of the definitive history of the Hortus Bulborum published in 2003 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the garden. $25 / $15 members
