Selections from the Reichenbachia, Exhibit in Lora Robins Library
Daily, February 14 - March 31, during regular Library hours
Selections from the Reichenbachia
Dr. Arthur Burke, an expert grower of rare and unusual orchids, has loaned to the Garden his rare, nearly complete 'Imperial' edition of the Reichenbachia—large-scale, late 19th century chromolithographs made from original hand-painted, life-sized illustrations of exotic orchids. From plantsman Frederick Sander’s 1894 compilation of 192 hand-painted, life-size illustrations named for the celebrated German orchidologist Henrich Gustav Reichenbach, the Reichenbachia was considered the authoritative work for orchid growers and collections during that period of history when plant hunters were searching all over the world for new and unusual specimens to satisfy the collecting appetites of orchid connoisseurs.
Dr. Burke’s loan of these important and valuable prints complements the Orchids Galore! display and offers a rare opportunity to see up close great works of botanical illustration by famed 19th Century artist Henry George Moon, who had a great impact on British plant drawings in the early twentieth century.
Also in the library: a model of a Wardian case, used to safely transport orchids and other exotic plants during the great age of plant exploration in the 19th century, and panels discussing plant exploration and Frederick Sander, the 'Orchid King.'
Included with regular Garden admission. Open during regular Library hours: Weekdays, 10 am - 4 pm, Saturday/Sunday, 1 - 4 pm.
