Making Family Memories

Members Shirley (“Mumsey”) and Charles (“PopPop”) Cheek discovered a meaningful birthday gift for their three young grandsons.

“We always take them to Lewis Ginter to look at the flowers, birds and butterflies, and the Children’s Garden has made it even better,” Shirley shared. “We love the Garden and wanted to support it, so when the mailer came out we decided to purchase each grandson a [blue stone] paver.” Each block was engraved with a grandson’s name, date and the phrase “Mumsey and Me on my first birthday.” It then was installed as a permanent part of the Garden walkway.

On each toddler’s first birthday, the whole family gathered at the Garden in celebration. The personalized paver was presented by the grandparents, and photographs were taken of the youngster squatting to see his gift for the first time.

“Every time we go to the Garden, we look for their stones,” Shirley said. “Lewis Ginter is so special to us, and now our grandsons will always remember the fun times because the pavers are going to be there forever—even after we’re long gone. One day maybe they can take their children to see them, too.”

“We even bought extra blocks,” Charles added with a smile. “Three in place … and two more ‘just in case’ there are more grandchildren.”
