The HortHelpline will answer your gardening questions, or connect you with a source who can provide an answer. Library staff and volunteers respond to phone, email and in-person requests. Before you contact the HortHelpline, please check our FAQs page to see if your question has already been answered. Routine questions about pruning, growing conditions and propagation are usually answered the same day. Some complex questions and plant identifications may require more time. Persons requesting a plant identification can email digital photographs to library@lewisginter.org. Live specimens should be brought to the Library in a sealed plastic bag containing complete contact information for the requestor. Please do not bring diseased plant material to the garden. For all pest and disease questions please contact your local Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.

Plant and Seed Sources

The library maintains a collection of current catalogs from
retail plant nurseries and seed suppliers.
This collection can be used during regular library hours.
The catalogs do not circulate.

To find out if the library has a particular catalog, or to find commercial sources for plants or seeds use the Plant and Seed Database. The database is searchable by company name and by common plant names. It contains active links to the websites of the nurseries.
