Overview
This symposium is one facet of a comprehensive project, funded by a grant from Henrico County, to increase efficient use of all water sources on Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's 82-acre campus. The Garden is a microcosm of an urban watershed, with buildings, parking lots, turf, meadow, densely planted gardens, diverse plant and wildlife, internal lakes and ponds, multiple irrigation systems, a created wetlands area and the controlled use of nutrients and pesticides. Located on the edge of Thorpe Branch Creek, which joins other creeks and rivers in the Chickahominy watershed, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden touches at least 160 acres of adjacent properties.
Under the guidance of Warren Byrd and his colleagues from the firm of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects in Charlottesville, the Garden's water management plan aims to improve the conservation of water that naturally occurs or falls on the site, the quantity of water that flows through the campus and into adjacent properties, and the overall quality of water that ultimately enters the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The project also, through events like this symposium, offers opportunities for public education about stewardship of precious water resources.
