Intermediate Drawing
FOR BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION

Continue to explore line quality and expressiveness in this follow-up to “Introduction.”  Students continue to develop the basic techniques and knowledge covered in Introduction to Drawing.  Complete one or more drawings of a seasonally-appropriate botanical  subject of your choice, practicing the core concepts taught in the class.  Accuracy of drawing is emphasized as well as artistic expression. Instructors:  Hazel Buys and Claudette Baker.  Lunch is on your own each day.

Our Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly recommended for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class, if possible.

About the Instructors

Hazel Buys has a certificate in Botanical Illustration from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and is lead instructor in the certificate program at the Garden. Her work is included in collections in Europe and in the United States.

Claudette Baker comes from a long lineage of artists and has lived her life as a student and teacher of various artistic practices. She taught art to children, served as a guest artist at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, and is a graduate of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s botanical illustration program. Claudette’s favorite medium is pencil, both color and graphite. She is a free spirit who accepts all with open arms. As a teacher, she encourages students to learn the basics as the first step in their journey to find their own style and voice. You can follow her on Instagram @claudette_baker.
