SUMMARY:Botanical Drawing II: Shading & Structure
DESCRIPTION:You’ve built a strong foundation in Botanical Drawing I—learning to see\, structure\, and create form using only line. That’s no small feat. Now\, it’s time to expand your understanding of depth and dimension by exploring light\, shadow\, and value. \nThis course takes the next step in your artistic journey\, sharpening your ability to see subtle shifts in light and shadow while deepening your focus and observational skills. Using graphite\, you’ll explore grayscale rendering and value mapping\, learning to blend smooth transitions between highlights\, midtones\, and shadows. The result? More refined\, visually rich botanical drawings that convey structure and realism. \nNature remains our greatest teacher. Together\, we’ll observe how light sculpts botanical forms\, sketch directly from life\, and refine our understanding of contrast. You’ll create a personal value finder\, experiment with artistic tools\, and gain confidence in shading—all in a supportive\, engaging environment where curiosity and practice make learning fun. \nNervous? That’s normal. But remember—you’ve already done the hard part. You’ve learned how to build form with line alone. Now\, you’re simply adding another layer of understanding. This is still a beginner’s course\, and you’ll be guided every step of the way. Let’s keep growing—one line\, one shadow\, one discovery at a time! \n See class supply list below. \n\nFees: Member $251\, Non-Member $300 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Representing Sunlight on Plants in Colored Pencils
DESCRIPTION:Although the classical school of botanical art does not recommend illustrating plants with sunlight illumination\, many contemporary academic botanical artists are achieving spectacular results with that\, without any impairment of the morphological or chromatic aspects of the plants portrayed\, proving that the pictorial tendencies in all types of visual art are in constant motion. Thus\, this course proposes a profound study of the very particular qualities of the reflection of the sunlight on plants\, which\, when not meticulously observed and represented\, can jeopardize the rendition of a good impression of the lighting atmosphere. We will explore the processes for capturing these qualities that enable us to accurately create and convey the illusion of sunlight through artistic representation. All classes are recorded\, and individual feedback is provided. \nIn this course\, we examine and practice with all the main characteristics of the sunlight on plants\, such as the core strong reflections\, the cast shadow and its details of form\, values\, and colors\, the precise contrasts\, the secondary light sources and their reflections\, as well as the lights and reflections caused by translucency\, and much more. Besides understanding the analytical and observational aspects above\, the classes provide a lot of technical information about colored pencils methods\, such as the processes for layering and dry blending (without solvents)\, lessons on the theory of colors\, the choice of colors and papers\, the order of use of different types of pencil\, how to make corrections\, advanced techniques\, etc. Moreover\, there are many tips about the correct representation of different types of surfaces and their particular reflective qualities\, be it shiny\, matte\, metallic\, glossy\, transparent (like a waterdrop)\, etc.\nIt is very recommendable that students have a good practical understanding of analytical drawing and the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade. These skills\, however\, do not need to have been developed from formal courses\, but the teacher also accepts anyone with self-taught abilities in that subject matter. Students can self-assess their skills and freely decide to enroll. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $230\, Non-Member $276 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
