In this three-day workshop\, you’ll discover how drawing deepens your connection to nature through guided observation\, inquiry\, and play. Rather than simply copying what you see\, you’ll learn to translate what captures your attention into expressive\, accurate marks—revealing how structure\, proportion\, and relationship give form its meaning. Each exercise invites you to follow your curiosity\, blending research\, sketches\, notes\, and imagination into a visual story of discovery and connection. You’ll also explore how botanical artists—past and present—use study pages to deepen their connection to the natural world and express meaning through observation. Seeing how artists transform curiosity into understanding will inspire your own creative practice. This class supports how adults naturally learn—through stories\, relationships\, and making meaning. DESCRIPTION:This course provides an in-depth overview of the tools and techniques used by botanists to identify woody plants to the species level using winter characteristics. Attendees are exposed to the key characters that differentiate woody plants at different taxonomic levels\, including growth form (habit)\, habitat\, bark and the various characteristics of the twigs such as bud size and orientation\, bud scales\, leaf scars\, bundle scars\, stipule scars\, branch/fruit scars\, pith structure\, lenticel configuration\, spur shoots\, armament\, fruits and others. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys published in various forms. An important focus of the course will be on empowering attendees to “dismantle” some of the terminology surrounding winter plant identification. SUMMARY:Pressed Flower Art: History\, Pressing and Card-Making
DESCRIPTION:In this creative workshop\, we’ll dive into the history of the ancient pressed-flower art form. Each participant will receive their very own flower press kit and instructor Conner Parrish will demonstrate how to properly harvest\, prepare\, and press local flowers. Then we’ll get crafty by designing four pressed-flower notecards using flower materials from Conner’s local farm in Ashland\, Blossoming Roots Farm and Supply. Each participant will be able to take home their flower press kit\, pressed-flower notecards and will have the knowledge needed to create pressed flower artwork at home! \nFees: Member $77\, Non-Member $92 \nAll programs are subject to change.
