SUMMARY:The Power of Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators and their choices have a powerful impact on our local ecosystem. They pick which flowers to pollinate\, therefore deciding which plants get to form a fruit with seeds and reproduce. Without pollinators\, entire terrestrial food webs and ecosystems would collapse. Fortunately\, there is still a lot we can do to protect and support the pollinators. In this class\, we will foster a love and appreciation for our pollinating friends. We will discuss various methods to support local wildlife by supporting pollinators and the overall food web. Participants will each receive a special mix of native plant seeds collected from Clara’s garden so they can start or add on to a pollinator garden at home! Come learn how to make a positive difference in the natural world with like-minded individuals! \nThis class has been cancelled. \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Ikebana for Early Summer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful and inspiring floral design experience exploring the ancient Japanese art of Ikebana. This month we are honored to feature the Kado Sensho Ikenobo School\, a distinguished tradition known for its deep respect for Ikebana’s rich history and its emphasis on simple\, elegant designs that allow each designer to express their individuality. Participants will learn about the philosophy and traditions of the Ikenobo style while practicing how to create harmonious\, balanced arrangements using exclusively natural materials. The demonstration theme\, “Early Summer Rain\,” reflects the quiet beauty of flowers after a summer storm—petals softened and bent by the rain\, imperfect yet still deeply beautiful. Inspired by this moment in nature\, participants will explore how simplicity\, balance\, and natural form can express both resilience and creativity\, letting the flowers themselves guide the design process. \n\nFees: Member $51\, Non-Member $64 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Illustrating Pollinators for Botanical Art: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A Three-Day Intensive Workshop on the Form and Function of Butterflies \nThis workshop is designed to deepen your understanding of butterflies beyond basic anatomy. Rather than simply identifying the head\, thorax\, and abdomen\, we’ll explore how leg structures\, mouthparts\, and flight patterns reveal a butterfly’s purpose\, personality\, and ecological role. By studying the epitome of form and function\, artists will gain insight into how these elements create life in motion. \nOver three intensive days\, we’ll blend structured instruction\, guided observation\, and hands-on drawing exercises to develop both technical skill and scientific understanding. Instead of rushing to complete a portfolio-ready piece\, you’ll create a meaningful\, well-designed observational record that serves as a foundation for future work. \nKey Learning Components:\n✔ Live Demonstrations & Guided Instruction – Learn structured methods for drawing butterflies accurately and scientifically.\n✔ Hands-On Drawing & Observation – Apply concepts directly through structured drawing exercises.\n✔ Scientific Pinning & Preservation – Learn techniques for preparing specimens for study and reference.\n✔ Group Discussions & Inquiry-Based Exploration – Strengthen your ability to interpret form and function through critical thinking. \nThis class bridges visual art\, science\, and ecology\, guiding botanical artists to illustrate not just the beauty of nature\, but its deeper purpose—capturing form\, function\, and the interconnected roles of pollinators through careful observation and mark-making. \n See class supply list below. \n\nThis class has been cancelled. \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Honoring the Light - and how it reflects on different surfaces
DESCRIPTION:This workshop aims to convey a system of observation of light and shade that addresses this complex issue with simple procedures. We begin by restricting our focus merely to the absolute qualities of light and shade in their extreme values. Thus\, the brightest highlight is recognized at first\, and everything else is left aside for a while. Once we identify its tonal value\, be it purely white or not\, the absolute quality of the highlight is determined\, and then it must become the parameter for representing all else. As we progress with the work\, the need for constant comparison of tonal values is fundamental until we establish the absolute quality of the darkest shade as well. From that point on\, it becomes easier to decipher and render the values of secondary lights\, midtones\, and reflections\, with all their obvious or subtle nuances. \nIn this course\, you will:\nDiscover the magic and complexity of light\, and improve your ‘artistic eye’;\nEnhance your ability to observe and represent different luminosities of light;\nUtilize the full spectrum of light’s qualities and learn to express its atmosphere;\nUnderstand how various surfaces reflect the light differently\, and can even transmit tactile sensation;\nExamine a variety of qualities of light phenomena\, like translucency and metallic reflections\, including the depiction of waterdrops;\nLearn to perceive subtle variations and specific types of transitions of values;\nInvestigate and accurately represent highlights\, midtones\, shadows\, and reflections;\nMake your drawings more dynamic by adding depth\, volume\, and dimension;\nGet inspired to create captivating realistic images by deeply learning about light’s nuances. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $185\, Non-Member $222 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Botanical Drawing II: Shading & Structure
DESCRIPTION:You’ve built a strong foundation in Botanical Drawing I—learning to see\, structure\, and create form using only line. That’s no small feat. Now\, it’s time to expand your understanding of depth and dimension by exploring light\, shadow\, and value. \nThis course takes the next step in your artistic journey\, sharpening your ability to see subtle shifts in light and shadow while deepening your focus and observational skills. Using graphite\, you’ll explore grayscale rendering and value mapping\, learning to blend smooth transitions between highlights\, midtones\, and shadows. The result? More refined\, visually rich botanical drawings that convey structure and realism. \nNature remains our greatest teacher. Together\, we’ll observe how light sculpts botanical forms\, sketch directly from life\, and refine our understanding of contrast. You’ll create a personal value finder\, experiment with artistic tools\, and gain confidence in shading—all in a supportive\, engaging environment where curiosity and practice make learning fun. \nNervous? That’s normal. But remember—you’ve already done the hard part. You’ve learned how to build form with line alone. Now\, you’re simply adding another layer of understanding. This is still a beginner’s course\, and you’ll be guided every step of the way. Let’s keep growing—one line\, one shadow\, one discovery at a time! \n See class supply list below. \n\nCANCELLED. \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
