SUMMARY:Multicolored and Pattern-colored objects rendered in colored pencils
DESCRIPTION:Different colors in the same object make it so exuberant that their appeal can easily catch the viewer’s attention\, hence the subtle shades and volume can often be bypassed or missed. Besides\, the profusion of visual information is at times so overwhelming that the artist may get confused as to how to start. To clarify and make these issues simpler\, this course provides a logical examination of the object through a step-by-step process that eliminates the perceptual noise\, focusing on one aspect at a time. This procedure evolves in degrees\, starting with the rendition of the most evident traits and gradually progressing toward the most complex and subtle. \nWe will employ colored pencils (water or oil/wax-based\, according to each student’s preference) on white and toned paper. Although color pencil is the technique chosen for this course\, all the principles addressed apply other color techniques like watercolor\, acrylic\, oil\, gouache\, or even digital illustration. \nIt is recommended that students have a good practical understanding of analytical drawing and the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade. These skills\, however\, are not required to have come from formal courses\, but the teacher also accepts anyone with self-taught abilities on that subject matter. Students can self-assess their skills and freely decide to enroll. \nThis course is a good complement to Rogério’s January class entitled “Translating Colors into Grayscale Values”\, which works as an in-depth introduction to the subjects addressed in this class\, but enrolling in one does not require enrolling in both. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $185\, Non-Member $222 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact MeganC@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Ohara School of Ikebana
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to introduce the student to the Ohara School of Ikebana\, an approach rooted in classical Ikebana but with modern and naturalistic elements. The 19th century founder of the Ohara School\, Unshin Ohara\, created a low bowl container to display plants and materials. As an artist devoted to nature\, he was inspired by mountain side and meadow landscapes and thought they would be interpreted best in a vessel which provided more surface of water. The design became known as “moribana” and is now included in the curriculum of most schools of Ikebana. Prior to this time Ikebana was primarily displayed in tall vases. The Ohara School is most distinguished for its beautiful scenic arrangements. In this class students will learn to construct a basic beginning arrangement using 7 stems including flower and branch material. This arrangement will reflect characteristics that make an Ohara arrangement uniquely Ikebana. A founding principle of this school is to observe nature and the way plants grow. \n\nFees: Member $49\, Non-Member $59 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Winter Botany
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an in-depth overview of the tools and techniques used by botanists to identify woody plants to the species level using winter characteristics. Attendees are exposed to the key characters that differentiate woody plants at different taxonomic levels\, including growth form (habit)\, habitat\, bark and the various characteristics of the twigs such as bud size and orientation\, bud scales\, leaf scars\, bundle scars\, stipule scars\, branch/fruit scars\, pith structure\, lenticel configuration\, spur shoots\, armament\, fruits and others. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys published in various forms. An important focus of the course will be on empowering attendees to “dismantle” some of the terminology surrounding winter plant identification. The course will also review practical considerations for identification of herbaceous (non-woody) plants in winter. Course handbook included\, with winter keys provided. Lecture\, field and lab practicum. \nFees: Member: $150\, Non-Member: $180 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Pen & Ink for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:This course builds on the skills learned in intermediate graphite drawing for botanical illustration. Using shapes and basic pen and ink techniques\, we explore the art of representing form with line. Class activities improve observational skills\, line quality\, and three-dimensional drawing (e.g. surface contours). In addition to learning pen and ink techniques\, students also acquire critical thinking skills and complete a botanical drawing. As a reminder\, dip pens and crow quill pens are not used in this class\, they are learned in the advanced pen and ink class after students have gained practical experience with rendering forms. \nStudents supply materials. Click on the link below in the Event Details section for the list of required materials. \n\nFees: Member $171\, Non-Member $205 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Translating Colors into Grayscale Values
DESCRIPTION:There is great appeal in all black & white drawings\, but although colors get suppressed\, their tonal values can and should still be faithfully represented in botanical art. The result of such an endeavor is surprisingly enchanting\, although the process is sometimes quite challenging. This course aims to navigate those challenges and explore logical and easier ways to observe\, perceive\, compare\, and represent all values to achieve a harmonious and precise outcome\, eliminating noise or confusion in the cognition of visual information. In this process\, colors restricted to their tonal values contribute to conveying an enhanced sense of realism. \nWe will explore methods of representation mainly using graphite or gray colored pencils on white and toned paper\, but the principles to be taught apply to any other black & white technique like pen & ink\, scratchboard\, engraving\, ink wash\, etc. \nIt is recommended that students have a good practical understanding of analytical drawing and the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade. These skills\, however\, are not required to have come from formal courses\, the teacher also accepts anyone with self-taught abilities on that subject matter. Students can self-assess their skills and freely decide to enroll. \nThis course is a good introduction to\, and can be complemented by Rogério’s next course “Multicolored and pattern-colored objects rendered in colored pencils”\, but enrolling in one does not require enrolling in both.
