SUMMARY:Exploring Our Ecological Self
DESCRIPTION:The reciprocal relationship between nature and people has significant\, research-supported positive implications on physical\, social and emotional health and wellness\, and on human communities and culture. But most of us never pause from our busy lives to closely examine our place in the natural world\, or our relationship with it. Using the Incanto sculpture\, Ancestors\, as inspiration\, we’ll delve deeper into our relationships with our ancestors and the role they play in cultivating our relationship with nature. We’ll explore the development of our “ecological self\,” or a self that transcends individualism to recognize the healing that we can achieve for ourselves\, our community\, and our natural world when we live in harmony with all living beings. Instructor Sarah Croscutt will guide you in a visit to the Ancestors sculpture in Flagler Garden as part of this class. You’ll walk away feeling a renewed sense of connection to your ancestors\, the natural world\, and yourself. \nWe believe that all adults in our community should have access to plant-based\, nature-focused learning opportunities. We offer several pricing tiers so you can register at the amount you’re able to pay. Thank you for your contribution. \n• Sustainer: $30 \n• Supporter: $20 \n• Contributor: $10 \n• Attendee: $0 \nAll programs are subject to change. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Finding Connection Through Awe
DESCRIPTION:Exposing ourselves to big or small awe-inspiring experiences\, especially those in nature\, taps into our feelings and emotions and reminds us we are a part of something bigger. In a world where many people feel lonely and disconnected\, our relationship with nature–our life source–is the foundation to our sense of belonging and purpose. Finding awe deepens our connection with the natural world\, ourselves\, and others. In this workshop\, we will examine our own story with nature\, stretching back to our earliest memories of the natural world. We will share our moments of awe\, unearth our feelings around nature through photos\, explore our ecological self through a series of reflective questions\, and find awe in the Garden by observing through different perspectives. Sharing and discussion will be encouraged! \nAll programs are subject to change. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges\, and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike!  Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge\, and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature\, and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. Instructor: Dr. Douglas DeBerry. \nAll programs are subject to change. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Garden Through the Year with Peggy Singlemann: Summer Flowering Perennials
DESCRIPTION:Join horticulturist and Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann at the Garden for information sessions on a variety of seasonal gardening topics. Peggy offers timely tips for your garden and all programs include a walk in the Garden with Peggy to illustrate examples. \nJust when the annuals are starting to wilt from the heat and humidity\, perennials come to the rescue\, perking up your summer garden with color and texture. And\, in our mild climate\, these summer performers offer interest well into our mild fall season. \n  \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are required for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. Non-vaccinated participants are also required to wear masks when outdoors and unable to maintain 6 feet of social distancing. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible. \nAll programs are subject to change.
