SUMMARY:Finding Connection Through Awe
DESCRIPTION:Exposing ourselves to big or small awe-inspiring experiences\, especially those in nature\, taps into our feelings and emotions and reminds us we are a part of something bigger. In a world where many people feel lonely and disconnected\, our relationship with nature–our life source–is the foundation to our sense of belonging and purpose. Finding awe deepens our connection with the natural world\, ourselves\, and others. In this workshop\, we will examine our own story with nature\, stretching back to our earliest memories of the natural world. We will share our moments of awe\, unearth our feelings around nature through photos\, explore our ecological self through a series of reflective questions\, and find awe in the Garden by observing through different perspectives. Sharing and discussion will be encouraged! \nAll programs are subject to change. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges\, and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike!  Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge\, and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature\, and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. Instructor: Dr. Douglas DeBerry. \nAll programs are subject to change. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. DESCRIPTION:Join Stephey Baker\, a local creative and avid urban gardener\, during Pollinator Week as she guides you step-by-step in creating a small bumble bee drawing. You don’t need to be an artist in order to participate\, and it’s okay if you’re a little scared of bees and other things “buzzing” in the garden. If you’re a lover of flowers and plants\, and are excited to experience the beauty of this hard-working super pollinator\, then this class is for you! Through the process of creating your own bumble bee drawing\, you’ll learn how to identify the bumble bees in your backyard; why bumble bees are 2-4 times more effective pollinators per bee than honey bees or solitary bees; what to plant for pollinators regardless of the size of your yard (or lack of it); how to distinguish wasps\, hornets\, and the flies that mimic bumble bees; why bumble bees are an annual insect; and more! Stephey is enrolled in a pollinator steward certification program through Pollinator Partnership and is excited to share what she’s learning with you. Come celebrate National Pollinator Week\, get creative\, and be informed by all the buzz in a relaxed and inspired environment. \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly encouraged for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible. \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:The Uniqueness of Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Like the seeds and growing instructions of various plants\, we each have our own set of conditions where we grow and thrive. What brings you joy? How do you rest and recharge? We will explore our individual connection with our environment through the examination of a variety of seeds and their specific growing instructions. We will consider the variety of depths\, light conditions\, spacing\, watering\, soil conditions\, and more that different seeds need\, and reflect on how that connects to the variety of growing needs for each individual person. In our final activity\, we will use our seed observations and inward reflections to design and create our individual seed packets with our own unique set of growing instructions to guide and encourage us to cultivate and blossom into our best selves. Sharing and discussion will be encouraged! \nAll programs are subject to change. This class is cancelled.
