DESCRIPTION:Please join us in celebrating Black History Month by exploring the vibrant silk thread artwork of Chief Babs on view in the Robin’s Visitor Center! \nChief Babs grew up in Northern Ghana\, Tamale. As a boy\, he often spent time away from the city in his grandfather’s village where he learned to appreciate the traditions and cultures of his people. Later\, Babs joined the Center for National Culture in Tamale\, where he practiced drumming and African dance\, which he performed throughout Ghana. After immigrating to the United States in 2011\, Babs has used his art to remember and celebrate the customs of his homeland. His artwork honors traditional African dance\, music\, village life\, hard work\, and family.

SUMMARY:Reichenbachia: A COTERIE OF ORCHIDS
DESCRIPTION:The Reichenbachia is a late 19th century collection of orchid prints produced by Frederick Sander\, also known as the “Orchid King”. Sander sent orchid hunters around the globe to bring back “new” orchids to market in his greenhouses in London\, Belgium\, and the US – fueling a Victorian-era orchid mania. \nEach of the 192 orchid prints in this collection is accompanied by a scientific description written by German botanist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach\, for whom the project was named. The text also describes the original habitat where each orchid was found and provides practical advice on keeping them. \nThe Garden’s collection was generously donated by Dr. Arthur Burke (1927 – 2025) and belongs to a larger\, limited edition set of 100 “Imperial Editions”. The printing method is called chromolithography\, in which each color of an original watercolor painting was recreated on separate printing blocks\, then combined to form the images you see on each print. \nPlease enjoy a glimpse at this fantastic collection of orchid art\, science\, and history in the Library Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Cusano from La Amatista and artist Leah Raintree for a discussion about their work\, The Earth Exhibition\, currently on display in the Lora M. Robins Library. Leah will share the process she goes through while creating her beautiful art\, from acquiring the resources and pigments to the finished piece. Lisa will discuss amethysts and responsible sourcing\, and will share insight about the natural earth pressure and the minerals that create beautiful designs on the stones. \nAt 4:30 p.m.\, author and philosophy teacher Dr. George Teschner will also read from his book of poetry\, Reflections on a Landscape Garden\, a reflection on philosophical themes using the metaphor of a landscape garden.

SUMMARY:A Wonder-full World Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Community Art Gallery in the Kelly Education Center (included with Garden admission) \nSophia is a 21-year-old woman with Down syndrome who lives life out loud and in vibrant color. She has studied Chinese brushstroke/Sumi-e watercolor painting for several years. More recently\, she’s begun to explore acrylic painting\, pottery\, and collages — as well as helping to create murals in her community. Sophia’s paintings have been displayed at the Chinese American Museum DC and the Artists4ERA campaign. She’s been the featured solo artist for shows at Capitol One headquarters\, Children’s National Medical Center\, the Pozez Jewish Community Center\, the Fredericksburg Area Museum\, and the Kennedy Center. \nSophia’s paintings capture the vivid and vibrant wonder of the world around her. Birds\, flowers\, and animal friends leap out to grab our attention. When asked about her art\, Sophia says\, “It makes me happy. I like feeling professional\, proud\, strong\, and confident when I make art.” Sophia says she wants people to make friends with her art. She takes pride in showing the greater world that people with an intellectual disability contribute a lot to their communities and can do great things when they have no limits and more opportunities.

SUMMARY:America the Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:In Loving Memory\n(1952–2025)\n“Be grateful—every day\, no matter what you face.” \nJourney through the remarkable life and inspiring art of Anh-Van Truong. Born in Vietnam in 1952\, Anh-Van endured unimaginable hardships—fleeing her homeland after the 1975 Communist takeover\, surviving multiple failed escape attempts\, and finally reaching freedom by boat with only a 3% chance of survival. After a year and a half in a Philippine refugee camp\, where she served as a UN interpreter\, she resettled in Canada and later made the U.S. her permanent home in 1983. \nA scholar of French literature and lifelong lover of painting\, Anh-Van worked with international embassies and raised three children\, honoring her heritage while embracing her new home. In her final years\, while battling stage 4 gastric cancer\, she returned to her first passion with America the Beautiful\, a moving exhibition that celebrated the spirit of each U.S. state and the people who call it home. Through every brushstroke\, Anh-Van expressed her gratitude\, resilience\, and deep love for the country that gave her a second chance.  \nThis exhibition will be on display in the Robins Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Portraits of Place
DESCRIPTION:Portraits of Place is part of a series of site-specific botanical collaborations that honor the land and our connection to it\, created by artist Hillary Waters Fayle. \nSourced from parks\, gardens\, or private properties\, each piece pays tribute to the people who have come before—those who tilled the soil\, planted seeds\, or tended trees and flowers. Pressed and preserved plant materials are carefully arranged and adhered to paper or acrylic\, visually reflecting the spectrum of human interaction with nature\, from wild meadows to formal gardens. The patterns formed by leaves\, petals\, and seeds express a deeper structure of connection within the natural world and our shared experiences. \nWhen a blueprint is to be made\, the finished arrangement is placed over watercolor paper coated with UV-sensitive iron salts. Exposed to sunlight\, the leaves cast shadows that block the rays\, creating a striking contrast once the paper is rinsed and dried: deep blue where the sun touched\, and pale hues where shadows fell. This cyanotype process—the original method for making blueprints—mirrors the themes of the work itself: sunlight as a life-giving force\, essential to plants\, to the cotton in the paper\, and to the image-making process. The result is both a visual record and a symbolic reflection of the land’s enduring story.

DESCRIPTION:Born in Long Island\, N.Y.\, Nancy Kulik received her Bachelor of Science degree in Fine Arts with a scholarship from Hofstra University. During her time there\, she had the opportunity to attend school in Rome and travel across Europe for a semester. This period of her education opened her soul to a deep connection with the Creator and creation through art\, people\, places\, and remarkable life experiences. It also sparked a lifelong passion for ministry and space planning\, two pursuits that often intertwine in unexpected ways. \nArt has always been a deeply personal spiritual experience for her\, both in the creative process and in visual expression. This connection has been most profoundly reflected in her recent exploration of the relationship between nature and scripture\, seeing them as tandem reflections of one another. \nThis exhibition is located in the Lora M. DESCRIPTION:Artist Mary Van Slyke invites you to celebrate spring and the return of lepidoptera (winged insects\, including butterflies and moths) with a visit to The Cecropia Moth Life Cycle at the Kelly Education Center\, Community Art Gallery. The exhibit features vibrant watercolor paintings that depict in detail the life stages of the cecropia moth. High-magnification scanning electron micrographs of wing scales and antennae highlight the incredible complexity of these fascinating creatures. \nIn addition\, oil paintings of several other native butterflies and moths showcase some of our favorite lepidoptera.
