SUMMARY:Larger Than Life: Moths and Butterflies of the World
DESCRIPTION:Please enjoy this exhibit statement from the artist\, Bailey Lonon: \n“The natural world has always been a massive point of inspiration and awe for me ever since I was a child. My whole life I hoped to bring that feeling to other people through art and education – these butterflies and moths are my first go at pursuing that passion. \nLepidopterans (the order of moths and butterflies) were my gateway to appreciating the rest of nature’s beautiful arthropods. I wanted to enlarge these more palatable insects to spark interest in other people for all the other creepy crawlies of the world\, just like their real-world counterparts did for me. \nThe accessibility of this project is an important facet to me. Each replica is made with easily accessible materials\, and the techniques used to make them are easy to learn. I brought them to life with materials such as cardboard\, foam clay\, and acrylic paints. I sincerely hope this exhibit will inspire others to look closer at the natural world and even replicate what they find beautiful about it as I have.”

SUMMARY:NO RELIABLE DATA AVAILABLE
DESCRIPTION:Come see Tim Harper’s multimedia work this September! With a background including Design\, Collage\, and Found Object Sculpture\, Tim has a keen interest in projects that occupy the space between science and art. He also creates public sculpture with his friend Matt Lively. \nHis pieces started as daily drawing exercises. Each morning\, Tim draws on a tablet with his morning coffee\, mostly birds and flowers. Eventually he started adding collage from old maps\, graphs\, charts\, and his own photos. That grew into experiments transferring his digital collages to wood\, then adding more traditional collage/drawing/painting on top. He did not start with any plan for these pieces; at each step he responded to what the imagery was doing until he felt like something interesting was happening. Some of the collage elements are from old survey maps\, which included blank areas labeled ‘No Reliable Data Available.’ He thought that was a fitting title\, as many of the pieces include data suggesting a story\, but not necessarily a reliable one.

SUMMARY:BROUGHT TO LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:The moth portraits depict moths native to central Virginia. I have seen each of them at my home near Charlottesville. I paint them large. It is intimate. Most people only see these night creatures as a flutter in headlights or at the porch light. There are at least ten times more moths than butterflies. Moths are critical players in the eco system\, therefore need to be protected and appreciated. Loss of habitat\, climate change\, and pollution are all factors that impact our flying insects. Learn about them and love them. In the Mid-Atlantic region there are approximately 3\,000 different species of moths. Over 15 years I have seen and identified around 1\,000 just at my place. I will never run out of subjects. A quote from Mary Oliver states my purpose. \n“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”

SUMMARY:Blossoms and Bugs
DESCRIPTION:There are intricate\, symbiotic relationships between vibrant flowers and their vital insect partners. While it is easy to marvel at the beauty of flowers\, insects are often misunderstood and spark different reactions. \nThis exhibition juxtaposes artistic beauty with ecological importance. Using the bold color palette and amplified details associated with Pop Art\, each painting magnifies the subtle details of nature\, highlighting the beauty of both blossoms and bugs. At times\, scientific accuracy gives way to artistic interpretation\, inviting viewers to appreciate the overlooked beauty and quiet intricacies of the natural world. \nBees\, butterflies\, and ladybugs are pollinators – the heroes of the garden – responsible for turning blossoms into fruits. Beetles and other Coleoptera make up the largest order of the animal kingdom\, with over 350\,000 known species. They support soil health and plant growth by enhancing soil structure\, managing pests\, and recycling nutrients through activities like burrowing\, feeding\, and decomposition. \nBlossoms and Bugs invites viewers to enjoy the natural beauty around us and cultivate a deeper sense of wonder and appreciation for nature’s essential partners. \nFind more of David Amoroso’s work at: AmorosoART \n

SUMMARY:ALEBRIJES: Creatures of a Dream World
DESCRIPTION:What are ALEBRIJES?\nAlebrijes are brightly colored\, fantastical creatures from Mexican folk art that often combine features from various animals—real and mythical—into a single\, surreal form. Originating in the 1930s with artist Pedro Linares\, who dreamt of strange hybrid beings while ill and later recreated them in papier-mâché\, alebrijes are known for their vivid colors\, intricate patterns\, and imaginative designs. While originally not tied to spiritual beliefs\, many contemporary interpretations associate alebrijes with symbolic meanings\, including representations of the four elements: earth\, air\, fire\, and water. For example\, a creature might have wings for air\, scales for water\, claws for earth\, and flames or bright colors symbolizing fire. Today\, they are celebrated as iconic symbols of Mexican art\, appearing in festivals\, museums\, and parades. We are excited to bring these magical creatures to the Garden and plan to offer a variety of activities and programs to enhance the guest experience. This will be the first time the Alebrijes will be in a Botanical Garden\, and their first time visiting the East Coast!

SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Sipping the Sun: A Masterclass in Mediterranean Terroir
DESCRIPTION:The Concept: Step into the light of the world’s most iconic coastal vineyards. This masterclass strips away the label and focuses on the elemental forces that define the Mediterranean glass: scorching sun\, cooling sea breezes\, and ancient\, rugged soils. From the limestone cliffs of the Levant to the windswept volcanic slopes of the Aegean\, you will discover how “”Liquid Sunlight”” is captured\, structured\, and served. \nThe Experience: We will move beyond the glass to explore the molecular harmony between the vine and the table. You will learn to decode a wine’s architecture—its bracing salinity\, its sun-drenched textures\, and its savory herbal core—and how these traits allow it to dominate the boldest flavors of coastal cuisine. This is a deep dive into wines born of heat but defined by their incredible freshness and poise. \n\nWhat You Will Master:\n• The Coastal Profile: How proximity to the sea creates wines with a distinct\, mouthwatering “”brine”” and mineral tension.\n• The Art of Structure: Learning to balance high-intensity fats and wild herbs with wines of significant weight and phenolic grip.\n• Old World vs. New World: A side-by-side exploration of ancestral traditions in the Mediterranean basin against the modern\, innovative interpretations of the Pacific Coast and the Southern Hemisphere.\n• The “Garrigue” Connection: Identifying the savory\, scrub-brush aromatics that create a natural bridge between the vineyard and the kitchen. \nThe Atmosphere: Guided by Sommelier & Wine Director Justin Ferguson\, this session is designed for the curious and the adventurous. Whether you are looking to elevate your weeknight dining or curate a world-class cellar\, you will leave with a professional framework for understanding why these sun-kissed regions produce the most versatile food wines on the planet. \nAll-inclusive fee covers tasting of 6 wines\, an elegant and delicious 6-course dinner\, complimentary wine glass and gratuity. \nFees: Member $90\, Non-Member $108 \nNote: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions\, please register more than one week before the program date and indicate your dietary needs during registration. Menus are set 1 week in advance and additional restrictions cannot be accommodated after that time.   \nParticipants 21 and older only. All programs are subject to change.  Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Ikebana for Early Summer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful and inspiring floral design experience exploring the ancient Japanese art of Ikebana. This month we are honored to feature the Kado Sensho Ikenobo School\, a distinguished tradition known for its deep respect for Ikebana’s rich history and its emphasis on simple\, elegant designs that allow each designer to express their individuality. Participants will learn about the philosophy and traditions of the Ikenobo style while practicing how to create harmonious\, balanced arrangements using exclusively natural materials. The demonstration theme\, “Early Summer Rain\,” reflects the quiet beauty of flowers after a summer storm—petals softened and bent by the rain\, imperfect yet still deeply beautiful. Inspired by this moment in nature\, participants will explore how simplicity\, balance\, and natural form can express both resilience and creativity\, letting the flowers themselves guide the design process. \n\nFees: Member $51\, Non-Member $64 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Arranging to a Prompt: Designing with Intention & Imagination
DESCRIPTION:A big part of floral design is arranging to a space\, a theme\, or a color palette — but what if the inspiration began with a single unexpected prompt? In Arranging to a Prompt\, participants will receive a creative cue — and translate it into a floral composition. The focus is not on replicating a look\, but on interpreting meaning. In this class you’ll evolve from simply arranging flowers… to communicating with them. Instructor: Kate Hugo Vernon \n\nFees: Member $77\, Non-Member $96 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Creating a Sense of Depth in Illustrations: Methods and Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Harmonious composition\, precise outline\, and accurate shading have immense importance as components of a great illustration. However\, conveying a good sense of depth is not secondary at all. Every artist eventually faces the challenge of having to deal with the nuisance of a flat result – meaning lack of perspective or three-dimensionality. \nThe solution might reside in subtle (or oftentimes quite conspicuous) aspects already present in the very subject portrayed\, which require more detailed attention. But in many other instances\, one may need to resort to artistic tricks\, optical artifacts\, or else inspiration stemming from other sources of knowledge and from the domains of different media. \nHence\, one can\, for example\, get from photography and optics the idea of different focus ranges for rendering variation of edge sharpness. By observing landscapes and distances\, one can draw inspiration to use the effect of atmospheric perspective and represent the proper scale of contrasts and neatness. Combining a few or all of those diverse resorts is also an option\, so that the different challenges can be cleverly sorted and all possible solutions reconciled. \nIn this course\, we will study the theory and the empirics behind those methods\, examine examples of masterful illustrations\, and mostly proceed to live demonstrations using graphite\, colored pencils\, and even a bit of pen and ink\, to explore and apply all the procedures available for the purpose of obtaining a convincing and eloquent sense of depth. Obs.: It is not mandatory that registrants employ the same media used in demonstrations. The students are free to utilize any other media they prefer. \nIn addition to the analytical approaches described above\, the classes provide extensive technical information and discussion of methods for achieving the best results across all media used. Classes are recorded and remain permanently available for all registrants. Students who need feedback on their practice will have an individual online meeting scheduled with the tutor. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $277\, Non-Member $346 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
