SUMMARY:Putting Botanical Art to Work
DESCRIPTION:Putting Botanical Art to Work Lecture with Eileen Malone (free with regular admission) \nSunday\, March 11\, 1 – 3 p.m. \nJoin us for a presentation about the recent book\, American Botanical Paintings: Native Plants of the Mid Atlantic and learn about how these contemporary plant portraits were created. We will compare a sampling of these captivating native plant paintings to portraits of the same plant by 18th-century naturalist and artist Mark Catesby. Attendees will discover how the proceeds from the sale of the books have been used to fund grants for the betterment of our communities. And last\, lessons-learned will be shared to inspire similar native plant botanical art projects in other locations. \nPresented by Eileen Malone\, a member of the Botanical Artists for Education and the Environment committee of Botanical Artists of the National Capital Region. Members of the Botanical Artists for Education & the Environment (BAEE) are committed to fostering the use and conservation of native plants while pursuing excellence in botanical art.  In this biennial exhibit\, explore work by students\, instructors\, and graduates of the Garden’s Botanical Illustration Certificate program in this age-old discipline and art form.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Lecture: Savory and Sweet Pies with Chef Anne
DESCRIPTION:It all begins with the crust! Executive Chef Anne Maury Haapala begins by demonstrating how to make an easy food-processor pie dough.  She’ll cover how to handle the dough and how to fix common crust catastrophes.  Anne says\, “I’m not a baker and maybe you aren’t either\, but we can do this!”  Anne will use her neutral pie dough to create savory and sweet traditional 9-inch pies and several varieties of hand pies\, including some that can be frozen and reheated for easy meals.  For those of us who need gluten free recipes\, Anne will also cover how to make a delicious gluten free crust.  Anne’s hour and a half demonstration is followed by a delectable lunch featuring some of the recipes discussed.

SUMMARY:Naturalistic Designs Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Playing off the ever-trending “modern farmhouse” craze\, these two sessions explore arranging with the muted gray foliage of mulleins and eucalyptus intermingled with textural greens and seasonal garden flowers in both vegetative and naturalistic mass styles. Demonstration and discussion explores the marriage of these materials and designs with appropriate aged metal\, rustic wood and pottery vessels.  Instructor Mary Garner Mitchell is an Ashland-based artist and floral designer who also conducts workshops with Nancy Ross Hugo.

SUMMARY:Using the Flora of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Recently published in 2012\, the Flora of Virginia is our long-overdue technical manual covering all of the native and naturalized plant species found in the Commonwealth.  This massive volume – almost 1600 pages in all – is the first comprehensive treatment of Virginia’s flora since the mid-1700s\, and if you’re like us you couldn’t wait to get your hands on a copy.  But if you are still asking yourself\, “OK\, how do I use this thing?”\, then the Flora of Virginia short course is for you.  This three-day session is dedicated to teaching you how to get the MOST out of your investment in the Flora of Virginia.  We’ll cover essential aspects of the Flora that will help you successfully navigate dichotomous keys at all levels (family\, genus\, species)\, teach you how to get the information you need out of the species descriptions\, and introduce you to some other very helpful components of the book that you may not have even known about.  We’ll explain how and why the book is structured the way it is\, how to cross-reference different sections\, and how to minimize wasted time and “dead ends” each time you use the Flora.  This course is taught by William and Mary professor Doug DeBerry\, who is a contributing author on the Flora and a professional botanist with nearly 25 years of experience. \nAttendees will need to bring their own copy of the Flora of Virginia\, or purchase one prior to the class.  The Flora of Virginia is available for purchase in The Garden Shop or online from BRIT Press (http://shop.brit.org/products/flora-of-virginia).  Course includes lecture\, lab\, and field practicum.  Prerequisites: Intermediate Botany or instructor permission. \nContact Hours: 21 \nThis class has been cancelled.
