SUMMARY:Introduction to Botanical Drawing I
DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to provide foundational drawing skills and inspire a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world. Any age can learn to draw. Marks on paper are all a drawing is. Marks can be made on paper by anyone. Despite this\, not everyone takes the time to learn how to draw. It isn’t easy to develop drawing skills without spending a lot of time drawing. This class provides time\, motivation and inspiration for you to draw. Learn to think like an artist\, get curious\, ask questions\, and play— all while learning how to draw. We start with an overview of botanical art and learn about the benefits drawing provides for the brain and our physiology. Drawing habits and dealing with the inner critic are also discussed. Using pencil marks on paper\, participants explore sketchbook work\, basic line qualities\, light on forms\, and transforming reality into three-dimensional illusions. Sketching\, contour drawing\, negative space\, and measured drawing are also covered. Experimentation\, questions\, and observations are encouraged in a relaxed and inspiring environment. \nThis is a beginner’s class. All are welcome to enroll. See class supply list below. \n\nFees: Member $243\, Non-Member $291 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact meganc@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Botanical Drawing II: Shading & Structure
DESCRIPTION:You’ve built a strong foundation in Botanical Drawing I—learning to see\, structure\, and create form using only line. That’s no small feat. Now\, it’s time to expand your understanding of depth and dimension by exploring light\, shadow\, and value. \nThis course takes the next step in your artistic journey\, sharpening your ability to see subtle shifts in light and shadow while deepening your focus and observational skills. Using graphite\, you’ll explore grayscale rendering and value mapping\, learning to blend smooth transitions between highlights\, midtones\, and shadows. The result? More refined\, visually rich botanical drawings that convey structure and realism. \nNature remains our greatest teacher. Together\, we’ll observe how light sculpts botanical forms\, sketch directly from life\, and refine our understanding of contrast. You’ll create a personal value finder\, experiment with artistic tools\, and gain confidence in shading—all in a supportive\, engaging environment where curiosity and practice make learning fun. \nNervous? That’s normal. But remember—you’ve already done the hard part. You’ve learned how to build form with line alone. Now\, you’re simply adding another layer of understanding. This is still a beginner’s course\, and you’ll be guided every step of the way. Let’s keep growing—one line\, one shadow\, one discovery at a time! \n See class supply list below. \n\nCANCELLED. \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Introduction to the Sogetsu School of Ikebana
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to introduce the student to the Sogetsu School of Ikebana\, founded in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara with the motto that Sogetsu Ikebana can be created anytime\, anywhere\, by anyone in any part of the world\, and with any materials. The Sogetsu School\, one of the most contemporary schools of Ikebana\, follows the core principle that\, “Ikebana reflects the person who arranged it”. Flowers no matter how beautiful come from nature and these natural materials are used to create beauty with our feelings. Basic artistic elements of line\, color\, mass\, space\, tension\, harmony and balance are all used in the creation of Sogetsu Ikebana. In this class\, students will create a Basic Upright Style Moribana Arrangement using flower and branch material. Students will learn the proper placement of the kenzan in the container and the placement of 3 main stems along with supporting stems on the kenzan. Students will learn how space creates artistic tension and how to create depth for harmony and balance in the arrangement. This arrangement reflects a key principle in Ikebana\, “Less is more” that is characterized by using fewer stems to highlight the natural beauty of each flower and branch. \n\nFees: Member $50\, Non-Member $60 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Water and Stone Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Born in Long Island\, N.Y.\, Nancy Kulik received her Bachelor of Science degree in Fine Arts with a scholarship from Hofstra University. During her time there\, she had the opportunity to attend school in Rome and travel across Europe for a semester. This period of her education opened her soul to a deep connection with the Creator and creation through art\, people\, places\, and remarkable life experiences. It also sparked a lifelong passion for ministry and space planning\, two pursuits that often intertwine in unexpected ways. \nArt has always been a deeply personal spiritual experience for her\, both in the creative process and in visual expression. This connection has been most profoundly reflected in her recent exploration of the relationship between nature and scripture\, seeing them as tandem reflections of one another. \nThis exhibition is located in the Lora M. Robins Library and is included with Garden admission. Please note\, the library is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
