SUMMARY:Illustrating Pollinators for Botanical Art: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A Three-Day Intensive Workshop on the Form and Function of Butterflies \nThis workshop is designed to deepen your understanding of butterflies beyond basic anatomy. Rather than simply identifying the head\, thorax\, and abdomen\, we’ll explore how leg structures\, mouthparts\, and flight patterns reveal a butterfly’s purpose\, personality\, and ecological role. By studying the epitome of form and function\, artists will gain insight into how these elements create life in motion. \nOver three intensive days\, we’ll blend structured instruction\, guided observation\, and hands-on drawing exercises to develop both technical skill and scientific understanding. Instead of rushing to complete a portfolio-ready piece\, you’ll create a meaningful\, well-designed observational record that serves as a foundation for future work. \nKey Learning Components:\n✔ Live Demonstrations & Guided Instruction – Learn structured methods for drawing butterflies accurately and scientifically.\n✔ Hands-On Drawing & Observation – Apply concepts directly through structured drawing exercises.\n✔ Scientific Pinning & Preservation – Learn techniques for preparing specimens for study and reference.\n✔ Group Discussions & Inquiry-Based Exploration – Strengthen your ability to interpret form and function through critical thinking. \nThis class bridges visual art\, science\, and ecology\, guiding botanical artists to illustrate not just the beauty of nature\, but its deeper purpose—capturing form\, function\, and the interconnected roles of pollinators through careful observation and mark-making. \n See class supply list below. \n\nThis class has been cancelled. \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact meganc@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:The Power of Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators and their choices have a powerful impact on our local ecosystem. They pick which flowers to pollinate\, therefore deciding which plants get to form a fruit with seeds and reproduce. Without pollinators\, entire terrestrial food webs and ecosystems would collapse. Fortunately\, there is still a lot we can do to protect and support the pollinators. In this class\, we will foster a love and appreciation for our pollinating friends. We will discuss various methods to support local wildlife by supporting pollinators and the overall food web. Participants will each receive a special mix of native plant seeds collected from Clara’s garden so they can start or add on to a pollinator garden at home! Come learn how to make a positive difference in the natural world with like-minded individuals! \nThis class has been cancelled. \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:America the Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:In Loving Memory\n(1952–2025)\n“Be grateful—every day\, no matter what you face.” \nJourney through the remarkable life and inspiring art of Anh-Van Truong. Born in Vietnam in 1952\, Anh-Van endured unimaginable hardships—fleeing her homeland after the 1975 Communist takeover\, surviving multiple failed escape attempts\, and finally reaching freedom by boat with only a 3% chance of survival. After a year and a half in a Philippine refugee camp\, where she served as a UN interpreter\, she resettled in Canada and later made the U.S. her permanent home in 1983. \nA scholar of French literature and lifelong lover of painting\, Anh-Van worked with international embassies and raised three children\, honoring her heritage while embracing her new home. In her final years\, while battling stage 4 gastric cancer\, she returned to her first passion with America the Beautiful\, a moving exhibition that celebrated the spirit of each U.S. state and the people who call it home. Through every brushstroke\, Anh-Van expressed her gratitude\, resilience\, and deep love for the country that gave her a second chance.  \nThis exhibition will be on display in the Robins Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Graphite Shading
DESCRIPTION:This course is very elucidative either for beginners or more experienced practitioners of pencil art. It aims to provide all the theoretical and practical tools necessary for beginners to initiate their practice and for intermediate students to improve their skills. We start from a basic understanding of the very mechanics of how graphite works\, as well as the importance of the texture of the paper and the sharpness of the pencil\, and how these aspects influence our intended result. We also address different ways to hold the pencil and the variety of motions used to produce the shading. From that understanding\, we expand our objectives and practice the visual apprehension of tonal values seen in nature in order to represent them accurately\, by aiming at the simplest approach with minimum effort involved. Once we dominate visual comprehension\, our hands will follow and begin to practice how to faithfully represent what we see with all its delicate nuances and subtle shifts. \nIn this course\, you will:\nLearn about the different types and qualities of graphite\, how and when to use them;\nExplore the different results that can be achieved according to the procedures and the materials employed;\nAnalyze how to hold the pencil according to the aimed outcome and how varying its motion produces different effects;\nInvestigate the fundamental role of an accurate observation associated with a simple system of progressive depiction of light and shades;\nUnderstand how to achieve precision and uniformity of lines and edges;\nPractice rendering smooth and beautiful gradients and how to make eventual corrections to them;\nLearn to perceive and represent subtle variations and specific types of transitions of values;\nExamine methods for correcting errors and avoiding causing severe damage to the paper and the finishing. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $185\, Non-Member $222 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike! Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course with Dr. Douglas DeBerry is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. \nFees: Member: $150\, Non-Member: $180 \nAll programs are subject to change.
