DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the Conservatory and tour the new Garden areas added as part of the Conservatory expansion. “Paths Around the Glass” is a guided outdoor tour that showcases the plants that can not only thrive in Richmond’s climate\, but are designed to provide food and shelter for insects and wildlife. You will discover the adaptive design techniques used to create the varied areas around the conservatory\, including: a hillside garden\, a parterre meadow\, a new courtyard for gatherings\, and aquatic plants and paths around the new lake area. As you go through the spaces\, you will discover a rich variety of plants that are primarily native and are well-suited for this environment from evergreens to hardy perennials that return each year. The landscape is designed for resilience\, transitioning from formal irrigated garden beds to more natural environments that rely on drought-tolerant and self-sustaining plantings that can thrive throughout the year. This tour will begin on the steps at the entrance to the Conservatory. This class is inspired by the post-revolutionary era where an increase in poverty prompted a cultural shift that elevated traditional staples such as corn\, beans\, and chiles into symbols of national identity. In the mid-to-late 1800s\, French traditions dominated the culinary landscape due in large part to the reign of Maximiliano and Carlota. Contemporary Mexican cuisine is a rich fusion born of historical evolution; ultimately\, French\, Spanish\, and indigenous flavors morphed together to create the “Mexican food” we love today. \nFollowing the discussion\, join Chef Danny for an elevated and delicious four-course dinner with paired cocktails\, wine and coffee. Grace Arents (1848 – 1926) loved gardening\, and left her property to be a botanical garden in memory of her uncle\, Lewis Ginter. As a tribute to Grace\, we remember the centennial anniversary of her passing with beautiful arrangements made from garden and florist materials. Bring a water-tight urn or compote (at least 3” deep) for your arrangement. To stay authentic to the time period\, we will not be using floral foam for our arrangements. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on September 27th from 11am–3pm for our Monarch Migration Celebration! \nCelebrate the annual migration of the monarch butterflies with an afternoon honoring Hispanic culture\, the incredible journey of the monarchs\, and the connections between people\, place\, and migration. Each fall\, millions of monarchs begin an extraordinary journey south to Mexico\, traveling thousands of miles to reach their overwintering grounds. This remarkable migration has long been celebrated throughout Mexico and holds a special place in communities along the monarch’s route. Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about their incredible flight through educational activities\, while enjoying live music from DJ Ray and delicious food from local food trucks. \nThe celebration will also serve as a send-off for our outdoor exhibit\, Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dreamworld\, giving guests one final opportunity to experience these vibrant\, fantastical sculptures before they too journey onward from the Garden.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to expand your garden the natural way in this hands-on fall workshop focused on dividing perennials and selecting small\, woody plants. Autumn is one of the best times to rejuvenate established plants and create new ones — and this class will show you how. We’ll begin with a brief\, practical overview covering the principles behind plant division\, including when and why to divide\, which plants respond best in each season\, and the tools and techniques that lead to successful results. From there\, participants will observe live demonstrations of dividing herbaceous perennials and smaller\, woody plants. Those who want to get their hands dirty will have the opportunity to practice dividing a variety of plants with guidance. Participants are welcome to take home a selection of divisions to start or expand their own garden. SUMMARY:Art in Bloom: Art Nouveau Floral Design
DESCRIPTION:Discover the elegance and beauty of the Art Nouveau movement through floral design. Inspired by the period’s graceful\, flowing lines and celebration of nature\, participants will explore how artists and designers incorporated the organic forms of flowers\, vines\, and garden plants into their work. \nThis class also honors Grace Arents (1848 – 1926)\, whose love of gardening and vision helped shape the legacy of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Arents bequeathed her property to become a botanical garden in memory of her uncle\, Lewis Ginter. As we commemorate the centennial of her passing\, we celebrate her passion for horticulture through beautiful floral arrangements created from both garden and florist-grown materials. \nFollowing a brief lecture and discussion on the history and defining characteristics of Art Nouveau\, participants will design a floral arrangement featuring soft\, pastel blooms and natural\, flowing forms that reflect the style’s distinctive aesthetic while paying tribute to Grace Arents’s enduring appreciation for gardens and floral beauty. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create the basic shapes and styles of floral designs—the building blocks for true creativity—with floral designer Mimi Cassick. This course will introduce you to techniques and styles commonly used by professionals. Learn preparation techniques\, how to create basic shapes and how to prepare flowers for long-lasting arrangements. Through step-by-step instructions\, students will have the opportunity to create timeless designs including symmetrical triangular design; spherical all-around design; classic vase arrangement; oblong long and low centerpiece; and body flowers\, boutonnières and corsages. Learn the basics of cut flower care and handling\, and receive a manual with pictures and descriptions of the most commonly used flowers in floral design.
