SUMMARY:The Earth Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In this two-part exhibition\, artist Leah Raintree and the family-run business La Amatista offer distinct yet complementary perspectives on the Earth’s deep material history. Through drawings infused with ocean sediment\, and ethically-sourced Uruguayan amethysts brought directly from the ground with care\, both contributors explore how natural materials can become conduits for reflection\, responsibility\, and reverence. \nTogether\, their works ask: What does it mean to engage with the Earth—not just as resource\, but as archive\, collaborator\, and witness? \nThis exhibition is located in the Lora M. Robins Library\, which is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Included with Garden admission.

SUMMARY:A Wonder-full World Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Community Art Gallery in the Kelly Education Center (included with Garden admission) \nSophia is a 21-year-old woman with Down syndrome who lives life out loud and in vibrant color. She has studied Chinese brushstroke/Sumi-e watercolor painting for several years. More recently\, she’s begun to explore acrylic painting\, pottery\, and collages — as well as helping to create murals in her community. Sophia’s paintings have been displayed at the Chinese American Museum DC and the Artists4ERA campaign. She’s been the featured solo artist for shows at Capitol One headquarters\, Children’s National Medical Center\, the Pozez Jewish Community Center\, the Fredericksburg Area Museum\, and the Kennedy Center. \nSophia’s paintings capture the vivid and vibrant wonder of the world around her. Birds\, flowers\, and animal friends leap out to grab our attention. When asked about her art\, Sophia says\, “It makes me happy. I like feeling professional\, proud\, strong\, and confident when I make art.” Sophia says she wants people to make friends with her art. She takes pride in showing the greater world that people with an intellectual disability contribute a lot to their communities and can do great things when they have no limits and more opportunities.

SUMMARY:Fall for Birds Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves birds so why not learn how to photograph them? It can be easier if you have a 200mm or longer lens but there are also tricks of the trade that can bring birds to you\, even in your own back yard! \nFall is the time of the year when birds are moving around…A LOT! They have finished raising their young\, are changing into winter plumage\, and preparing for winter and maybe even migrating south. \nOur first class will discuss bird photography and techniques used to capture great images of birds. Learning bird behavior\, where to find birds\, how to attract them\, and learning that patience is a huge part of bird photography will be discussed. We will practice some techniques in the Garden. In the follow up class there will be a critique where students are encouraged to share their best work and any discoveries they had made or difficulties they ran into. This is a fun learning experience in itself! \nFees: Member $165\, Non-Member $198 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required.  This class is cancelled.  \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Representing Sunlight on Plants in Colored Pencils
DESCRIPTION:Although the classical school of botanical art does not recommend illustrating plants with sunlight illumination\, many contemporary academic botanical artists are achieving spectacular results with that\, without any impairment of the morphological or chromatic aspects of the plants portrayed\, proving that the pictorial tendencies in all types of visual art are in constant motion. Thus\, this course proposes a profound study of the very particular qualities of the reflection of the sunlight on plants\, which\, when not meticulously observed and represented\, can jeopardize the rendition of a good impression of the lighting atmosphere. We will explore the processes for capturing these qualities that enable us to accurately create and convey the illusion of sunlight through artistic representation. All classes are recorded\, and individual feedback is provided. \nIn this course\, we examine and practice with all the main characteristics of the sunlight on plants\, such as the core strong reflections\, the cast shadow and its details of form\, values\, and colors\, the precise contrasts\, the secondary light sources and their reflections\, as well as the lights and reflections caused by translucency\, and much more. Besides understanding the analytical and observational aspects above\, the classes provide a lot of technical information about colored pencils methods\, such as the processes for layering and dry blending (without solvents)\, lessons on the theory of colors\, the choice of colors and papers\, the order of use of different types of pencil\, how to make corrections\, advanced techniques\, etc. Moreover\, there are many tips about the correct representation of different types of surfaces and their particular reflective qualities\, be it shiny\, matte\, metallic\, glossy\, transparent (like a waterdrop)\, etc.\nIt is very recommendable that students have a good practical understanding of analytical drawing and the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade. These skills\, however\, do not need to have been developed from formal courses\, but the teacher also accepts anyone with self-taught abilities in that subject matter. Students can self-assess their skills and freely decide to enroll. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $230\, Non-Member $276 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
