SUMMARY:Reichenbachia: A COTERIE OF ORCHIDS
DESCRIPTION:The Reichenbachia is a late 19th century collection of orchid prints produced by Frederick Sander\, also known as the “Orchid King”. Sander sent orchid hunters around the globe to bring back “new” orchids to market in his greenhouses in London\, Belgium\, and the US – fueling a Victorian-era orchid mania. \nEach of the 192 orchid prints in this collection is accompanied by a scientific description written by German botanist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach\, for whom the project was named. The text also describes the original habitat where each orchid was found and provides practical advice on keeping them. \nThe Garden’s collection was generously donated by Dr. Arthur Burke (1927 – 2025) and belongs to a larger\, limited edition set of 100 “Imperial Editions”. The printing method is called chromolithography\, in which each color of an original watercolor painting was recreated on separate printing blocks\, then combined to form the images you see on each print. \nPlease enjoy a glimpse at this fantastic collection of orchid art\, science\, and history in the Library Gallery. For further information or to view the entire collection\, please follow the link below for our digital Reichenbachia exhibit and gallery. \nDIGITAL REICHENBACHIA EXHIBIT AND GALLERY

SUMMARY:Winter Wonders: A Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Winter is the time of year where a lot of photographers put their cameras in the closet until spring – however\, the winter landscape can offer incredible opportunities to sharpen your skills! \nIn winter\, color won’t be much of an option. Therefore\, you’ll have to sharpen your knowledge of composition\, lighting\, shape\, shadow\, pattern and texture. You can experiment with black and white imagery as well! \nThis class will start out with an introductory presentation in the classroom on the elements mentioned above\, followed by a visit to the Garden for practical skills building. Instructor Lynda Richardson will demonstrate in the Garden first. Then\, she will be available to assist as you explore and put your new knowledge to work. \nWe will have two shooting times\, one before lunch and one after. After that\, we will go back to the classroom and share some of our best photographs with the class in an open critique. This is always a fun exercise where everyone learns something\, including the instructor! \nIf you want a winter photography challenge\, consider signing up for the Winter Wonders class! \nFees: Member $78\, Non-Member $94 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact meganc@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Hydroponics
DESCRIPTION:Hydroponics is a type of horticulture that involves growing plants without soil\, in water\, and with a growing medium. Hydroponic growing can be done at home and has many benefits over other growing methods\, but most people don’t know how to get started. The good news is that it doesn’t take much to start your hydroponic growing journey\, and the output is so rewarding! Join Ekene Tharpe\, Department Chair\, Horticulture with Reynolds Community College\, for an introduction to hydroponics! Ekene will help break hydroponics down to its core elements including system types\, system inputs\, and the essentials of successful growing. As part of the class\, Ekene will lead a tour to see the Babylon Micro-Farms hydroponic growing system installed in the Robins Visitors Center. Students will walk away with the ability to grow their own leafy greens and herbs year-round indoors! \nFees: Member $40\, Non-Member $48 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Threads of Unity
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in celebrating Black History Month by exploring the vibrant silk thread artwork of Chief Babs on view in the Robin’s Visitor Center! \nChief Babs grew up in Northern Ghana\, Tamale. As a boy\, he often spent time away from the city in his grandfather’s village where he learned to appreciate the traditions and cultures of his people. Later\, Babs joined the Center for National Culture in Tamale\, where he practiced drumming and African dance\, which he performed throughout Ghana. After immigrating to the United States in 2011\, Babs has used his art to remember and celebrate the customs of his homeland. His artwork honors traditional African dance\, music\, village life\, hard work\, and family.

SUMMARY:Exploring Cacao & Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to Valentine’s Day\, join horticulture section leader Jayton Howard to learn about all things chocolate. What is cacao and where does it come from? When did this plant become so prominent in our diets? How does it grow and what are cacao’s growing needs? As a Hawaii-born cacao professional\, Jayton will teach you all this and more\, leaving you feeling like an expert. \nAs part of the cacao experience\, you’ll get the chance to taste chocolate in a whole new way — we’ll snack on cacao nibs\, feel the benefits of cacao butter on our skin\, and see what a fresh cacao pod is like inside and out! We’ll compare delicious chocolates with the taste of raw cacao fruit and develop our palates to a whole level of chocolate appreciation. To celebrate the winter season\, we’ll enjoy a hot chocolate tasting sure to warm you up on a chilly day. \nDo you want to grow cacao as a house plant? You’ll get the opportunity to plant a fresh cacao bean and watch it emerge into a baby cacao tree in a matter of weeks\, equipped with all the knowledge you need to keep it growing. \n  \nFees: Member $35\, Non-Member $42 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact registrar@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.
