SUMMARY:ALFONSO PÉREZ ACOSTA Art
DESCRIPTION:Art Installation \nSaturday\, July 31\,  1-4:30 pm \nArtist in Residence Exhibition\nJuly 31 – Oct 31\, on view daily in the Anderson Meadow\nIncluded with regular Garden admission  \nJoin us to watch the artist in residence\, Alfonso Pérez Acosta\, create his art installation of your rock paintings!  Earlier this summer\, visitors select and painted a rock that spoke to them. Now\, Alfonso Pérez Acosta will create a large circular art installation with those rocks at the base of the Anderson Meadow. Come see him make this large-scale community art piece! \n\nArtist Statement\nThis project is about reconnecting with nature\, and I have found that the main way of doing this happens by exploring our deep internal nature.  What is it? What does it look like? How does it feel?  In this exploration\, I’ve been particularly drawn to rocks as a natural element\, an artistic medium and a spiritual anchor to navigate these questions personally and with others.  For me\, the most meaningful answers come from an emergent need to recognize and investigate my Indigenous heritage\, and on a collective level\, the whole experience has found a home in the principles of the Medicine Wheel\, an ancient rock formation created by Indigenous Peoples of North America as a sacred space for healing and spiritual practices. \nMy art installation is the result of a creative conversation between these elements is meaningfully inspired by the Medicine Wheel\, with over 300 rocks painted by people of different ages\, genders\, races and cultural backgrounds who participated in our four workshops at the Garden\, each of us reconnecting with nature externally and internally by exploring our own internal natures. This installation gathers all the rocks in a circular area where visitors can see every drawing\, painting\, word or scribble and interact with the space by walking to the central circle\, as an invitation to be present with the healing intentions and inclusive energy of many of us wanting to restore our connection to nature. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Year in the Rose Garden
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Richmond Rose Society Show\, join us for a special workshop A Year in the Rose Garden\, free with Garden admission. \nPre-registration required due to capacity limitations. \nThere is not much difference between a rose garden and any other sort of garden.  All gardens require a series of simple tasks performed on a relatively flexible schedule. The results of that attention to your garden will reward your effort. This program gives a month-by-month outline of what to do to have a rose garden you love. Connie Hilker is a longtime rose collector and operated Hartwood Roses\, a former specialty rose nursery. Hilker will be selling and signing copies of her book Heritage Roses: A Collection of Essays and Lessons after her program. \nMasks: Our Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are required for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. Non-vaccinated participants are also required to wear masks when outdoors and unable to maintain 6 feet of social distancing. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible.

SUMMARY:Humans in the Landscape: Heal the Land\, Heal Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 are reinforcing for all what psychologists and environmental advocates have long stated: being outside is quite literally healing. Many have turned to the natural environment seeking spiritual and physical restoration. \nAs people continue to seek solace in outdoor environments\, from public to private to accidental spaces\, we have learned that the landscape is healing us\, and are learning to appreciate how it\, in return\, needs to be healed. We are beginning to understand that interaction with the landscape is molded by our own cultures\, diversity and origins. \nIn 2021\, the Landscape Symposium explores the complexity of our interactions with the natural world: as much as we need it\, it needs our care and attention. We’ve invited three practitioners\, researchers and thinkers who are deeply engaged in how urban space is accessed and made central to humans to explore this complex relationship and begin a conversation that will resonate at many different levels and tones. \nIn-Person Ticket: $30 pp includes breaks and lunch \nVirtual Ticket: $30 pp includes live virtual webinar and ability to access the recording for a limited time after the event
