SUMMARY:Advanced Watercolor Workshop: Sepia Techniques for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Sepia allows for the creation of a detailed painting\, focusing on structure and form\, without the challenge of color matching. Students will continue to hone watercolor techniques and brush skills using sepia to develop form by observing and painting light and shadow while continuing to build experience in watercolor brush techniques such as wet-on-wet\, wet-on-dry\, and dry brush. The classes will also emphasize the observation of detail to create a monochrome work depicting the accurate size and structure of a dry specimen of the students’ choosing. Students will be supplied with a subject for the first class. For subsequent classes\, they will be asked to bring subject matter (leaves\, twigs\, seed pods\, etc.) for use in observing structural detail and developing finished paintings. This is an advanced level class. \nScroll down to view and print the materials list.   \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly encouraged for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible. \nAll programs subject to change.

SUMMARY:Alcohol Inks: Inspirations on Tile
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol inks are a relatively new fascination of painters and crafters. A vibrant\, fast drying medium\, they are used to paint on non-porous surfaces such as glass\, tile\, or metal. The possibilities for experimentation are limitless. Experience the almost instant magic of these inks on tile. Using florals and landscapes as inspiration\, participants will create colorful\, abstracted tiles. Painting expertise or even any experience at all is not necessary. Designed to be a creative adventure\, this class is for everyone.  *If you have used alcohol inks before or taken a previous workshop join us! You may learn something new and improve your technique. All materials are supplied and completed tiles will be yours to take. Dress for mess; alcohol inks will stain clothing and are not approved for use by children. \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Pen and Ink
DESCRIPTION:At a basic level\, drawing is merely making marks on paper. This class builds on previous knowledge gained from intermediate graphite drawing for botanical illustration. Learn how to render form and value through the simplicity of a mere black line. Focus is given to exercises that promote thinking three-dimensionally (e.g. contour drawing)\, creative process and using simple techniques such as hatching and stippling (to name a few) —are all rendered with various drawing pens. Understand the difference between a fineliner\, a technical pen\, a brush pen\, and rapidograph\, plus\, discover the limitations and benefits of each. Learning how to test and evaluate drawing pens in order to serve your creative goals is explored as well. By the end of class you’ll be able to make educated decisions as to which drawing pen is best for you in bringing your creative goals to fruition. This class works with botanical subjects appropriate to the season. Artistic expression\, botanical accuracy\, and experimentation are encouraged. Note: This class does NOT use dip pens or crow quill pens; these materials are explored in the pen and ink class dedicated to dip pens. \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly recommended for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible. \nAll programs subject to change.

SUMMARY:One Native Chef's Journey to Cultural Culinary Discovery and Understanding
DESCRIPTION:Join Chef Joe Rocchi as he discusses how his passion to discover a buried history of native culinary traditions brought him to a life changing journey of learning\, understanding\, and sharing the immense beauty\, contributions\, and sometimes dark history of the cuisines native to the Americas. A cuisine whose indigenous ingredients have literally changed the way the entire world sustains itself\, has had virtually no culinary representation here on native land in America\, nor the world at large\, having been intentionally buried. Explore food sovereignty\, generational knowledge\, colonization\, Indian boarding schools\, food sources used as a weapon to control the indigenous people of this land\, food related illnesses among the indigenous population (diabetes\, heart disease\, etc.)\, the journey of rediscovery and the best new restaurant in the country focusing on only precolonial indigenous foods. Learn about native ingredients and where to source them\, take away some recipes using those ingredients and join Chef Joe for a demonstration and tasting of fry bread.

SUMMARY:Em White | Sundown
DESCRIPTION:Included with regular Garden admission\, free for members. \n \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden Photography Exhibition \nEm White is an American photographer and visual artist specializing in vintage photographic processes and large-format work. Raised in rural Virginia\, much of her work emphasizes personal relationships to land and the ways in which environment informs the emotional self. Drawing on her background in sociology\, White examines how natural environments function as community spaces and the ways that they can connect and transform. Primarily self-taught\, White’s approach to photography has been shaped by personal experimentation and opportunities to learn from established artists. She works with analog processes\, valuing the ability to produce by hand for the slow movement they require and the present state of mind they demand.

SUMMARY:Springtime in Virginia - April 5
DESCRIPTION:In early March\, spring creeps in. Fruit trees and witch hazels bloom on bare limbs and early bulbs emerge among the leaves. By April\, daffodils\, tulips and bluebells color the ground while viburnum and redbuds paint the canopy above. The blazing colors of rhododendrons and azaleas fill the space between. With warming weather\, peonies\, iris and roses emerge. Learn what makes “A Million Blooms” possible and how the Garden changes\, including the brief appearance of ephemerals. Acquire information about perennials recommended for beginning gardeners with small spaces.
