DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS FULL. \nSpecialized relationships between animals and plants are the norm in nature rather than the exception. It is specialized relationships that provide our birds with insects and berries\, that disperse our bloodroot seeds\, that pollinate our goldenrod\, and so on. Plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Tallamy will explain why this is so\, why specialized food relationships determine the stability and complexity of the local food webs that support animal diversity\, why our yards and gardens are essential parts of the ecosystems that sustain us\, how we can use our residential landscapes to connect the isolated habitat fragments around us. It is time to create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than destroy them. \nSchedule:\n12:30 pm Registration opens\n1:00 pm   Restoring Nature’s Relationships with Doug Tallamy\n2:15 pm   Panel discussion with Doug Tallamy \n\nModerator\, Kristin Thoroman\, Director of Education and Exhibits\, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\nAndrea Almond\, landscape architect\, director and senior project manager\, 3north\nLorrie Lincoln\, pollinator activist and certified landscape designer\nDr. Stefanie Spera\, Assistant Professor of Climate Change\, University of Richmond\n\n3:15 pm Doug Tallamy book signing \nDoug Tallamy’s books\, Bringing Nature Home and The Living Landscape (with Rick Darke)\, are for sale in the Garden Shop.

SUMMARY:Building with the Brick: Featuring LEGO® Education Products
DESCRIPTION:Building with the Brick: Featuring LEGO® Education Products! \nThis series of trainings with LEGO® Education will provide teachers and school leaders with the opportunity to bring STEM learning alive by engaging students in relevant issues and real world problem solving while connecting to current content standards. \nDr. Shirley Disseler\, a LEGO Education Trainer\, professor at High Point University\, and author of “The Brick Math Series”\, will provide sessions developed to engage and motivate learners in math\, science\, language arts\, and social studies. \n  \nThursday\, July 18; 9a.m. – 12p.m.\nStory Telling with the Brick – Grades K-5\n(Links to STEM Children’s Literature)\nStory Starter empowers teachers to infuse literacy into the science curriculum and science into the language arts curriculum to create confident and engaged readers. We will look at current fiction and non-fiction children’s literature\, build models to develop literacy and vocabulary skills and discuss how story starter can be utilized across curriculums in the elementary classroom. \n  \nThursday\, July 18; 1 – 4p.m.\nBrick Math Introduction – Grades K-5\nBrick Math is a new curriculum designed by Dr. Disseler to infuse conceptual understanding of math concepts through modeling with the brick. Topics will include addition\, subtraction\, place value\, fractions and decimals. \nFriday\, July 19; 9a.m. – 12p.m.\nWeDo 2.0 Early Robotics – Grades 2-5\nDive into coding as you experiment with math and science to build a robotic kicker\, allowing for measurement lessons to develop. You will also develop a robotic animal and learn how to infuse this project into standards involving habitats\, life cycles\, and species adaptations. \nFriday\, July 19; 1 – 4p.m.\nSimple Machines – Grades 2 – 5\nLearn how students can use LEGO® bricks to explore and investigate real-world actions and reactions\, build more complex mechanisms\, and design their own engineering solutions to problem scenarios. The workshop will focus on the forces and motions standards within the curriculum\, including builds experimenting with gears and engineering of simple machines such as the lever\, screw\, and pulley systems. \nSaturday\, July 20; 9a.m. – 12p.m.\nEV3 Robotics – Grades 4-8/ FIRST® LEGO League\nIgnite student engagement and energize learning through real-life problem solving. Engage your students in computer science\, science\, technology\, engineering and math. Boost learning curves and help all your students reach their curriculum targets.
