SUMMARY:Introduction to Pen and Ink for Scientific Illustration: Summer
DESCRIPTION:Primarily associated with scientific illustration because of its ease for reproduction in books and scientific journals\, pen and ink is a valuable tool for the botanical artist.  Instructor Lorraine Brevig helps you build and expand on your previous experiences with drawing and rendering in graphite.  Become familiar with and practice the use of conventional dipping pens such as the crowquill\, and experiment with technical pens such as a Rapidograph pen. Practice with a variety of drawing surfaces to create a clean\, flowing line\, then learn other techniques to create volume and form.  Methods of putting together a “plate” for scientific illustration are discussed as well. Intermediate level.

Tickets at the member pricing are now sold out\, but there are still tickets available at the non-member pricing. Please visit Eventbrite to purchase a ticket for this event.  Toro Nagashi is also offered on Thursday night.   \nIn the spirit of the Japanese ceremony\, Tōrō Nagashi\, please join us for our second annual candlelit floating lantern commemorative event. Traditionally\, this late-summer Japanese ceremony honors the memory of loved ones. During the festival of Obon\, it is believed that ancestors come back to spend time with the living. On the final evening of the festival\, paper lanterns are set afloat to accompany the spirits as they depart for another year. Tōrō (灯籠)\, pronounced toh-roh\, means “lantern\,” while nagashi (流し)\, pronounced nah-gah-shee\, means “cruise” or “flow.” \nOn this evening from 6 – 9 p.m.\, enjoy contemplative live music\, meander the paths of the Central Garden and Cherry Tree Walk to discover self-reflective prompts\, and enjoy food and beverages for purchase. As dusk falls\, observe the tranquil scene of floating glowing lanterns in Lake Sydnor and the pools of the Central Garden. This family-friendly event includes the opportunity to join in making a community paper chain of wishes and commemorations. \nToro Nagashi activities are made possible by Bliley’s. \n SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: \n6 – 9 p.m. Guests can meander paths of the Central Garden and Cherry Tree Walk to discover self-reflective prompts. Acoustic music in select locations will delight and surprise. Food and beverages will be available for purchase (see menu below). \n 6 – 8 p.m. Opportunity for guests to join in making a community paper chain. Write your own special wish\, or commemorate a loved one\, on a strip of paper\, and link it to another person’s. Watch how the chain comes together\, each link connecting to and supporting the other. \n \nAs dusk falls\, Garden staff will float glowing lanterns in Lake Sydnor and the pools of the Central Garden. \nMENU:  \nPacific Rim Caesar with Grilled Salmon \n  \nPad Thai – vegetarian \nChicken Banh Mi \nSpiraled Vegetable Asian Salad with Sesame Dressing – gluten free\, vegan \nFresh Fruit Salad with Lime and Honey dressing – vegan / gluten free \nCheese & Fruit Platter – vegetarian/gluten free (except for the crackers) \nKids’ meals – turkey & cheese rolls ups\, goldfish\, applesauce & juice box \nSoft Drinks and Bottled Water \nWine & Beer \nSeptember 18 Music and Performances \nStrolling violinist – Treesa Gold will be performing from 6-8:30 p.m. beginning at the gazebo and throughout the Garden. \nSound Bowl Concert –Natasha Foreman of Lucid Living performing from 6 – 8:30 p.m. in front of the Conservatory. \nRiver City Taiko (traditional Japanese drumming) performing at 6:30 p.m. – 6:50 p.m. in the Rose Garden.
