DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves birds so why not learn how to photograph them? It can be easier if you have a 200mm or longer lens but there are also tricks of the trade that can bring birds to you\, even in your own back yard! \nOur first class will discuss bird photography and techniques used to capture great images of birds. Learning bird behavior\, where to find birds\, how to attract them\, and learning that patience is a huge part of bird photography will be discussed. We will practice some techniques in the Garden. In a follow up class there will be a critique where students are encouraged to share their best work and any discoveries they had made or difficulties they ran into. DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to provide foundational drawing skills and inspire a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world. Any age can learn to draw: marks on paper are all a drawing is\, and marks can be made on paper by anyone. Despite this\, not everyone takes the time to learn how to draw. After all\, it isn’t easy to develop drawing skills without dedicated time. \nThis class provides the time\, motivation and inspiration for you to draw. You’ll learn to think like an artist\, get curious\, ask questions\, and play — all while learning how to draw. We start with an overview of botanical art and learn about the benefits drawing provides for the brain and our physiology. Drawing habits and dealing with the inner critic are also discussed. \nUsing pencil marks on paper\, participants explore sketchbook work\, basic line qualities\, light on forms\, and transforming reality into three-dimensional illusions. Sketching\, contour drawing\, negative space\, and measured drawing are also covered. Experimentation\, questions\, and observations are encouraged in a relaxed and inspiring environment. \nThis is a beginner’s class. All are welcome to enroll. DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the Conservatory and tour the new Garden areas added as part of the Conservatory expansion. “Paths Around the Glass” is a guided outdoor tour that showcases the plants that can not only thrive in Richmond’s climate\, but are designed to provide food and shelter for insects and wildlife. You will discover the adaptive design techniques used to create the varied areas around the conservatory\, including: a hillside garden\, a parterre meadow\, a new courtyard for gatherings\, and aquatic plants and paths around the new lake area. As you go through the spaces\, you will discover a rich variety of plants that are primarily native and are well-suited for this environment from evergreens to hardy perennials that return each year. The landscape is designed for resilience\, transitioning from formal irrigated garden beds to more natural environments that rely on drought-tolerant and self-sustaining plantings that can thrive throughout the year. This tour will begin on the steps at the entrance to the Conservatory. This class is inspired by the post-revolutionary era where an increase in poverty prompted a cultural shift that elevated traditional staples such as corn\, beans\, and chiles into symbols of national identity. In the mid-to-late 1800s\, French traditions dominated the culinary landscape due in large part to the reign of Maximiliano and Carlota. Contemporary Mexican cuisine is a rich fusion born of historical evolution; ultimately\, French\, Spanish\, and indigenous flavors morphed together to create the “Mexican food” we love today. \nFollowing the discussion\, join Chef Danny for an elevated and delicious four-course dinner with paired cocktails\, wine and coffee. DESCRIPTION:Victorian florals were often full\, lush\, and created with materials from their gardens. Grace Arents (1848 – 1926) loved gardening\, and left her property to be a botanical garden in memory of her uncle\, Lewis Ginter. As a tribute to Grace\, we remember the centennial anniversary of her passing with beautiful arrangements made from garden and florist materials. Bring a water-tight urn or compote (at least 3” deep) for your arrangement. To stay authentic to the time period\, we will not be using floral foam for our arrangements. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to expand your garden the natural way in this hands-on fall workshop focused on dividing perennials and selecting small\, woody plants. Autumn is one of the best times to rejuvenate established plants and create new ones — and this class will show you how. We’ll begin with a brief\, practical overview covering the principles behind plant division\, including when and why to divide\, which plants respond best in each season\, and the tools and techniques that lead to successful results. From there\, participants will observe live demonstrations of dividing herbaceous perennials and smaller\, woody plants. Those who want to get their hands dirty will have the opportunity to practice dividing a variety of plants with guidance. Participants are welcome to take home a selection of divisions to start or expand their own garden.
