SUMMARY:Em White | Sundown
DESCRIPTION:Included with regular Garden admission\, free for members. \n \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden Photography Exhibition \nEm White is an American photographer and visual artist specializing in vintage photographic processes and large-format work. Raised in rural Virginia\, much of her work emphasizes personal relationships to land and the ways in which environment informs the emotional self. Drawing on her background in sociology\, White examines how natural environments function as community spaces and the ways that they can connect and transform. Primarily self-taught\, White’s approach to photography has been shaped by personal experimentation and opportunities to learn from established artists. She works with analog processes\, valuing the ability to produce by hand for the slow movement they require and the present state of mind they demand.

SUMMARY:Butterflies LIVE!
DESCRIPTION:Please note: We will not have our Butterflies LIVE! exhibit in 2024 and 2025 while we expand the Conservatory to include a permanent butterfly house. Learn more about the Garden’s expansion project.\n\n\n\nIncluded with Garden admission; open 9 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.\nLearn more about visiting M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE! \n \nExperience the wonderful world of butterflies! Tropical and native beauties\, fascinating and showy\, transform the Conservatory’s North Wing into a wonderland of vibrant colors…captivating sights…and extraordinary discoveries. Every butterfly is different\, as is every visit! Due to an earlier closing time\, please note the last group of visitors will be admitted to Butterflies LIVE! at 4:15 p.m.\n \nTop 5 Things to Know Before You Visit\nButterflies LIVE! is an exhibit inside the North Wing of the Conservatory and is geared for all ages. The environment is warm and humid. Our tropical butterflies love the heat\, but for the safety of our guests and staff\, if temperatures inside the display reach a heat index of 115\, the exhibit will close and reopen once safe to do so. Consider visiting earlier in the day to avoid disappointment.\nButterflies tend to be most active on clear\, sunny days. On cloudy days\, they tend to roost\, which can be good for taking close-up photos. You may want to plan your visit accordingly.\nLarge bags are discouraged in the exhibit. Since many of the butterflies are tropical species\, they must remain in the exhibit. At the same time\, butterflies like to hitchhike! For that reason\, large objects such as backpacks\, oversized totes and pocketbooks are discouraged inside the exhibit. There is a place to leave belongings inside the staffed entry\, however\, the Garden is not responsible for them. For the same reason\, strollers are discouraged inside the exhibit. There is a place to park strollers in front of the Conservatory. Wheelchairs are permitted. \nNew Butterflies Daily!\nEach day we release new butterflies into the exhibit. You may even see newly emerged butterflies take their first flight! Look for information on our newest flying friends as you enter the exhibit. We’ll highlight which butterflies are new to the exhibit\, their country of origin\, their photo and other neat facts. Meet the butterflies! Check out special displays inside the exhibit\, including the Butterfly Nursery where you can view different stages of the butterfly lifecycle and also interesting moths. \nThe Reason Behind Butterflies LIVE!  \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a nonprofit garden. Our mission is education and our passion is bringing people and plants together to improve communities. Butterflies LIVE! shows the interdependence of people\, plants and insects and encourages all to care for nature. \nJoin us for fun family activities in the Children’s Garden where you can learn how to do the bee dance and participate in our Butterflies LIVE! KidQuest. \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Voice: The Language of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Floriography\, or the language of flowers\, is the covert expression of one’s feelings through flowers and flower arrangement. Although this practice has been in place for thousands of years in Europe\, Asia\, and Africa\, it is closely associated with England’s Victorian Era. Messages and feelings were expressed through the language of flowers in gifted\, small bouquets\, called tussie-mussies. Using the Garden as inspiration\, we will explore the language of flowers and find our own voice within the world of plants\, creating our own tussie-mussie to express our thoughts and feelings. This class is a part of the Lessons from Nature series with Sarah Croscutt. \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly encouraged for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class\, if possible. \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Color Mixing for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:It can seem watercolor painting needs only water + watercolor paint. Mix them together\, apply to paper with a brush and voila! It’s not quite that simple. It is essential for watercolor artists to observe and recreate the highlights\, mid-tones\, and shadows of specimens in a variety of hues and values. The ability to manipulate the medium and utilize materials (think: water\, pigment\, paper\, brush) is essential as a watercolorist. Color theory and basic watercolor painting techniques are introduced through hands-on exercises\, including creating color gradients\, painting a basic color wheel and its grayscale counterpart\, and creating basic forms using fruits and vegetables. Along with practicing in class\, students must also practice on their own each week. The amount of time spent improving skills outside of class is up to students. For class requirements to be met\, students must complete all projects and demonstrate basic skills in the medium. Guidelines will be provided for students to follow. In between classes\, students receive support through an online classroom. Students can post their work\, ask questions\, receive feedback from instructors and peers\, review lessons via video\, and access a comprehensive color library. Creative processes that deliver results\, color matching accuracy\, and experimentation are emphasized. In a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere\, Stephey Baker will guide you through group exercises and creative discussions. \nSome materials are provided. Click on the link below for additional required materials. \nFees: Member $201\, Non-Member $235 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact meganc@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t matter where you live–in a city\, the country\, or a suburb–there is always something beautiful that surrounds you. You just have to begin to notice it! Nature journaling helps you slow down\, let go of the never-ending tasks on your to-do list\, focus on the natural beauty of the world\, and find a peaceful place within (even for just a moment). Using words\, drawings\, numbers\, pictures\, and even colors\, nature journals document your experiences. You don’t have to be an artist\, a writer\, or a gardener to journal about the natural world. Experience nature journaling for yourself! Join Stephey Baker\, local artist and avid urban gardener for bumble bees\, as she guides you step-by-step in creating a nature journal unique to you. Journaling in nature improves observation skills and memory\, engages your five senses\, decreases your blood pressure\, and allows you to discover something new every day. Through this course\, you can make a nature journal just for yourself\, or share the beauty and wonder of nature with someone special by taking the class together with them. \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly encouraged for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures.
