SUMMARY:Vibrant Visions with Water Soluble Oil Pastels
DESCRIPTION:This two day workshop is about being inspired to create your own images of light\, color\, and beauty; along with experiencing the pure joy of playing with art media. I will lead you through the process of “painting” vibrant\, expressive\, works of art. Liquid watercolor provides brilliant colors to use as an underpainting. Water soluble oil pastels offer artists vivid colors with the consistency of oil pastels. Whatever you put down a surface can then be manipulated further with water and a few good brushes. This is a class designed for anyone at any skill level. There are no wrong answers! Try something new for the pure fun of it all! \nOur Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly recommended for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. DESCRIPTION:PLF is a collective of multi-talented artists\, performers\, and community builders based in Richmond\, VA and along the central east coast. For nearly a decade\, PLF has been a staple in local music and performance arts spaces. Their mission of nurturing community growth is pursued by hosting events and workshops\, as well as offering grant programs aimed at fueling numerous art projects\, large scale installations\, and other collaborative & creative endeavors. \nTheir events are treasured by many\, such as the well-known PyroCircus RVA First Friday street shows that are free to the public outside of Gallery5\, and Decemberween\, a long-standing New Years tradition that takes place at Diversity Richmond and is admired as the most immersive NYE event in the city. You can also usually find them hosting theme camps at nearby regional Burning Man events\, like Ignite in Stewart Va. \nFor this special burner-inspired evening at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, PLF will be showcasing some of their many artists and skills with daring fire performances\, energetic DJ sets\, a booming sound system\, impressive propane flame effects\, mind-blowing visual projection art\, and everything that they’ve come to be known for. \n  \nExperience INCANTO: AN OASIS OF LYRICAL SCULPTURE all summer long!\n“Source Code” sculpture by Kate Raudenbush with poetry by Sha Michelle. \nDramatically lit from within\, the Incanto sculptures offer multi-sensory experiences inviting further exploration at night.\n \nOn the second Friday evening of each month May\, June\, July\, August\, and September\, the Garden collaborates with Gallery5 and other community partners on programming related to the Incanto exhibit. \n  \n

Many trips later to fabric stores and sending for more scraps\, as well as gifts of scraps\, it went from a hobby to a need. \nAbout the Artist \nLucy Kilpatrick is probably best known as a local musician (keyboardist) playing for a variety of bands in the Richmond and tidewater area. When not performing\, she enjoys working with visual arts such as quilting and fiber arts\, and has taught a few needle felting classes. \nIncluded with regular Garden admission\, free for members.

SUMMARY:GALLERY5 PRESENTS AN INCANTO EVENING OF JAZZ
DESCRIPTION:Richmond\, VA is home to some of the finest jazz musicians in the nation. For years our jazz community has been growing and developing while keeping the beautiful sounds of traditional jazz alive and well. Ayinde Williams is a piano virtuoso from Richmond\, VA\, and is keeping our region’s jazz legacy alive and well by playing with many of Richmond’s finest talents. On June 9th join Ayinde Williams as he performs two sets of jazz music with his band. ART 180\, another lovely Jackson Ward arts organization\, will be providing a local artist to do live painting to the jazz music. Local music organizations WRIR and Classical Revolution RVA will be on hand to connect with the community on their musical offerings for the Richmond region. \nIncanto is a journey through a sculptural\, epic poem embraced by nature. The five monumental sculptures will explore profound concepts of identity and the higher self\, the energy of ancestry\, the transformational present moment\, the perspective of the past\, and finally\, the balance between technology and the source code of our Earth. Visitors will be encouraged to journal and explore sculptures that call to them and resonate with the spoken poetry on an audio narration. Some works will form gathering spaces; some will be symbolic portals to journey through\, and others will invite stillness and meditation. We will center our Collective healing through movement\, breath\, sound\, and holistic practices curated to help us understand how to hold loving\, caring space for ourselves and each other. So bring your yoga mat or a blanket\, some water\, and an open heart for this community celebration. \nThis is a fundraising event to support the mission of Project Yoga Richmond\, and to amplify collective unity. You don’t need to be an artist in order to participate\, and it’s okay if you’re a little scared of bees and other things “buzzing” in the garden. If you’re a lover of flowers and plants\, and are excited to experience the beauty of this hard-working super pollinator\, then this class is for you! Through the process of creating your own bumble bee drawing\, you’ll learn how to identify the bumble bees in your backyard; why bumble bees are 2-4 times more effective pollinators per bee than honey bees or solitary bees; what to plant for pollinators regardless of the size of your yard (or lack of it); how to distinguish wasps\, hornets\, and the flies that mimic bumble bees; why bumble bees are an annual insect; and more! Join Debra Freeman\, host and creator of Setting the Table podcast\, as she gives you the exclusive scoop on the highlights of her research for her upcoming book\, which explores the impact of African American brewers and distillers in Virginia and the United States. Sip a Mint Julep and enjoy some nibbles during the talk. \nSince America’s inception\, African-Americans have been vital to every cornerstone of this country’s culinary history\, from barbecue and fried chicken to creating Southern food as a culinary genre\, and just about everything in between – including alcoholic beverages. \nLost Spirits will delve into the impact that African-Americans in distilling and brewing have made in Virginia and in the United States\, including the stories of enslaved women brewers and enslaved men who distilled for their owners without recognition\, Black women moonshiners across the country during Prohibition\, the incredibly creative mixologists of the 1800s who created drinks we still partake of today\, and will also spotlight current day mixologists\, brewers\, and distillers that are changing the face of spirits today.
