SUMMARY:Healing Circles: Ajiaco Soup and Healing Plants
DESCRIPTION:This art workshop is connected to the mandala exhibition by Alfonso Perez Acosta at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, which reflects on alternative healing practices through a series of mandala paintings. This workshop is the second of third offered by Alfonso\, each focusing on two of the six healing practices captured in his mandala paintings. \nIn this bilingual (Spanish/English) workshop\, we’ll start with an artist-led tour of the mandala exhibit in the Kelly Education Center to learn about Alfonso’s two mandala paintings that connect to a Colombian soup called Ajiaco (representing the comforts of home\, family and tradition) and healing plants. Then we’ll engage with the ingredients and flavors of Ajiaco soup (including tasting the soup\, prepared by Alfonso’s mother!) and explore the basics of healing plants found in Virginia. We’ll roll our sleeves up as Alfonso guides each participant in creating your very own mandala or healing circle on canvas using different drawing and painting tools. Throughout the process\, you’ll connect your direct experiences surrounding Ajiaco soup (and whatever else grounds you in the comforts of your culture) and healing plants to use as inspiration for the colors\, shapes\, symbols and objects of your mandala. No artistic experience required! \nEste taller de arte está conectado a la exposición de mandalas de Alfonso Perez Acosta en Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden que refleja practicas alternativas de sanación mediante una serie de mandalas. SUMMARY:Intermediate Watercolor for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Students in this course will continue to build on fundamental skills acquired in Intermediate Drawing\, Color Mixing\, and Intro to Watercolor. Through hands-on experiences\, artists increase their understanding of color. These experiences are designed to develop an “educated eye” capable of identifying hues\, color temperatures and coordinating values with increased accuracy. Artists are guided step-by-step to complete watercolor studies (both within and outside the classroom) utilizing traditional watercolor techniques crucial to creating depth\, form\, and the illusion of three-dimensionality. Slow\, methodical work is emphasized\, as is the need to record and document observations accurately using the scientific method. Artists must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the entire painting process\, from the preliminary work to the final product. This is done by visually documenting their planned approach from beginning to end. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Watercolor for Botanical Illustration. \nAll programs subject to change. Please note that the dates that were originally published for this course have changed. This now course begins in November 2023. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Advanced Watercolor for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Students start each class painting with warm-up exercises designed to advance students’ brush skills and focus on art’s key elements (line\, shape\, form\, etc.). Wet-on-wet\, wet-on-dry and dry brush painting techniques will be practiced through creative play. The afternoon is spent integrating morning concepts into paintings. Throughout class\, students will practice techniques for producing clean\, crisp edges\, as well as soft and sharp lines. Students are expected to advance at their own pace\, relax and have fun while gaining the skills and confidence to progress their work. \nThe Botanical Illustration certificate curriculum is currently being redesigned. Students in this course can expect to share class space with peers of varying experience. This course aims to provide every student with the opportunity to advance their botanical illustration skills in a supportive environment that meets each student where they are. Individual or small group instruction will be provided by the instructor during class\, ensuring curated support. Slow and deliberate work will be encouraged. As a result\, students may not complete their work before class ends. This is acceptable\, as emphasis will be on skills progression over completion of work.  \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. Please note that the dates that were originally published for this course have changed. This now course begins in December 2023. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:The Milpa and the Maguey
DESCRIPTION:Join Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on the road as we explore Mexican Cuisine with Chef Danny Mena at Conejo. In 2010\, UNESCO put Mexican cuisine on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage\, primarily because of the bean\, the chile and corn. The evening will start with a talk by Chef Danny\, who will focus on these delicious and versatile plants along with the farming practices that have been used for centuries to grow these amazing crops. The symbiosis between corn\, squash and beans has allowed Mexican cuisine to flourish in small farms throughout Mexico. The class title “La milpa y el Maguey” incorporates words in Nahuatl\, the tongue spoken before the Spanish Conquista\, and has been incorporated into the Spanish language in Mexico. Milpa means “a small field mainly of maize” and Maguey\, from the Nahuatl Mahagua\, means “the plant that gives life or water–agave.” Chef Danny will provide participants with recipes to take home. \nFollowing the discussion\, join Chef Danny for an elevated and delicious four-course dinner with paired cocktails\, wine and coffee! \nMenu: \nGuacamole and Chips and Heirloom Bean Dip\nHouse made corn tortilla chips\nWinter Spritz \ntequila\, grapefruit\, lime\, rosemary\, soda water \nWinter Squash Salad\nDelicata squash\, heirloom beans\, wild greens\, chile ancho vinaigrette\nComo la Flor \nmezcal\, coffee liqueur\, hibiscus\, lime \nMole de Pato\nDuck confit in a Classic Oaxacan Mole\, bed of cabbage and potato served with house made tortillas\nMonte Xanic \nChenin Blanc ’21 – Baja Caifornia\, MX \nCapirotada\nClassic warm mexican bread pudding\, seasonal fruit\, chocolate\, cinnamon\nMexican Coffee with canela \nNote: We are able to accommodate vegetarian requests and non-alcoholic beverages.
