SUMMARY:Portraits of Place
DESCRIPTION:Portraits of Place is part of a series of site-specific botanical collaborations that honor the land and our connection to it\, created by artist Hillary Waters Fayle. \nSourced from parks\, gardens\, or private properties\, each piece pays tribute to the people who have come before—those who tilled the soil\, planted seeds\, or tended trees and flowers. Pressed and preserved plant materials are carefully arranged and adhered to paper or acrylic\, visually reflecting the spectrum of human interaction with nature\, from wild meadows to formal gardens. The patterns formed by leaves\, petals\, and seeds express a deeper structure of connection within the natural world and our shared experiences. \nWhen a blueprint is to be made\, the finished arrangement is placed over watercolor paper coated with UV-sensitive iron salts. Exposed to sunlight\, the leaves cast shadows that block the rays\, creating a striking contrast once the paper is rinsed and dried: deep blue where the sun touched\, and pale hues where shadows fell. This cyanotype process—the original method for making blueprints—mirrors the themes of the work itself: sunlight as a life-giving force\, essential to plants\, to the cotton in the paper\, and to the image-making process. The result is both a visual record and a symbolic reflection of the land’s enduring story.

SUMMARY:Honoring the Light - and how it reflects on different surfaces
DESCRIPTION:This workshop aims to convey a system of observation of light and shade that addresses this complex issue with simple procedures. We begin by restricting our focus merely to the absolute qualities of light and shade in their extreme values. Thus\, the brightest highlight is recognized at first\, and everything else is left aside for a while. Once we identify its tonal value\, be it purely white or not\, the absolute quality of the highlight is determined\, and then it must become the parameter for representing all else. As we progress with the work\, the need for constant comparison of tonal values is fundamental until we establish the absolute quality of the darkest shade as well. From that point on\, it becomes easier to decipher and render the values of secondary lights\, midtones\, and reflections\, with all their obvious or subtle nuances. \nIn this course\, you will:\nDiscover the magic and complexity of light\, and improve your ‘artistic eye’;\nEnhance your ability to observe and represent different luminosities of light;\nUtilize the full spectrum of light’s qualities and learn to express its atmosphere;\nUnderstand how various surfaces reflect the light differently\, and can even transmit tactile sensation;\nExamine a variety of qualities of light phenomena\, like translucency and metallic reflections\, including the depiction of waterdrops;\nLearn to perceive subtle variations and specific types of transitions of values;\nInvestigate and accurately represent highlights\, midtones\, shadows\, and reflections;\nMake your drawings more dynamic by adding depth\, volume\, and dimension;\nGet inspired to create captivating realistic images by deeply learning about light’s nuances. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Before class begins\, she will set up a moth observation sheet and special UV lamps to attract them. After a brief introduction to native Virginia moths with some discussion time\, we will head into the woods to start making observations. As moths land on the sheet\, we will take photographs and attempt to identify and log each insect for citizen science on iNaturalist. DESCRIPTION:In Loving Memory\n(1952–2025)\n“Be grateful—every day\, no matter what you face.” \nJourney through the remarkable life and inspiring art of Anh-Van Truong. Born in Vietnam in 1952\, Anh-Van endured unimaginable hardships—fleeing her homeland after the 1975 Communist takeover\, surviving multiple failed escape attempts\, and finally reaching freedom by boat with only a 3% chance of survival. After a year and a half in a Philippine refugee camp\, where she served as a UN interpreter\, she resettled in Canada and later made the U.S. her permanent home in 1983. \nA scholar of French literature and lifelong lover of painting\, Anh-Van worked with international embassies and raised three children\, honoring her heritage while embracing her new home. In her final years\, while battling stage 4 gastric cancer\, she returned to her first passion with America the Beautiful\, a moving exhibition that celebrated the spirit of each U.S. state and the people who call it home. Through every brushstroke\, Anh-Van expressed her gratitude\, resilience\, and deep love for the country that gave her a second chance.  \nThis exhibition will be on display in the Robins Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Graphite Shading
DESCRIPTION:This course is very elucidative either for beginners or more experienced practitioners of pencil art. It aims to provide all the theoretical and practical tools necessary for beginners to initiate their practice and for intermediate students to improve their skills. We start from a basic understanding of the very mechanics of how graphite works\, as well as the importance of the texture of the paper and the sharpness of the pencil\, and how these aspects influence our intended result. We also address different ways to hold the pencil and the variety of motions used to produce the shading. From that understanding\, we expand our objectives and practice the visual apprehension of tonal values seen in nature in order to represent them accurately\, by aiming at the simplest approach with minimum effort involved. Once we dominate visual comprehension\, our hands will follow and begin to practice how to faithfully represent what we see with all its delicate nuances and subtle shifts. \nIn this course\, you will:\nLearn about the different types and qualities of graphite\, how and when to use them;\nExplore the different results that can be achieved according to the procedures and the materials employed;\nAnalyze how to hold the pencil according to the aimed outcome and how varying its motion produces different effects;\nInvestigate the fundamental role of an accurate observation associated with a simple system of progressive depiction of light and shades;\nUnderstand how to achieve precision and uniformity of lines and edges;\nPractice rendering smooth and beautiful gradients and how to make eventual corrections to them;\nLearn to perceive and represent subtle variations and specific types of transitions of values;\nExamine methods for correcting errors and avoiding causing severe damage to the paper and the finishing. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. DESCRIPTION:Although the Conservatory is closed temporarily\, the Garden still has hundreds of plants that have been moved from greenhouses into the Garden. Add some favorite annuals and you have dazzling displays with a tropical vibe of color\, blooms and unique pollination strategies. Join Garden Guide Julia Cothron to view “the Conservatory outside” and learn where you will see many of these plants year-round when the expanded Conservatory opens in 2026. \nFees: Members $0\, Non-Members $22 \nAll programs are subject to change.
