SUMMARY:Composition for Botanical Illustration Audit
DESCRIPTION:Composition plays a fundamental role in the final result of an artwork. This virtual course will address the main principles of composition and design that can turn even apparently uninteresting subjects into enticing elements with great artistic and aesthetic attributes. Some principles of design–shape\, proportion\, value\, contrast\, pattern\, emphasis\, center of attention\, movement\, balance and harmony\, spatial or environmental context\, perspective and illumination–can conduct the observers’ view to tell them a visual or naturalistic story and magnetize their attention. In this process\, we will understand why we need to avoid symmetrical forms\, as well as coincident lines and circumscribed shapes that lead to optical illusions or confusing visual information. Creative process\, group discussion and articulating ideas (including how to break the rules) are encouraged\, all while maintaining the pillars of botanical art and illustration\, scientific accuracy\, aesthetics and skill. \nFees: Member $140\, Non-Member $168 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Composition for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Composition plays a fundamental role in the final result of an artwork. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo will address the main principles of composition and design that can turn even apparently uninteresting subjects into enticing elements with great artistic and aesthetic attributes. To embody all concepts and foster intuition\, students will perform a series of practical exercises\, developing minor and major projects with individual feedback from the teacher. Such projects can lead to works of art to be finished after the course. Creative process\, group discussion and articulating ideas (including how to break the rules) are encouraged\, all while maintaining the pillars of botanical art and illustration\, scientific accuracy\, aesthetics and skill. \nFees: Member $190\, Non-Member $228 \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Garden Through the Year with Peggy Singlemann: Backyard Composting
DESCRIPTION:The secret to a successful garden is the soil. Soil needs organic matter to sustain the organisms living within and the best source for the soil’s “food” is compost. Composting yard waste\, vegetable food scraps and other organic materials diverts these resources from the landfill into the garden. In this class\, horticulturist and Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann will provide all the information you need to manage an active compost system. We’ll discuss how to manage compostable materials in the home and the basic principles behind the science of composting. You’ll learn how those principles apply to the practice of composting\, why compost benefits the soil and the different compost bins and tools used to put the practice into action. Class will begin indoors before moving out into the Garden to illustrate examples of composting practices. \nFees: Member $30\, Non-Member $36 \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Protecting the James River Watershed
DESCRIPTION:The James River\, America’s Founding River\, has a rich history and diverse\, ecological distribution. Its 10\,000 square mile watershed is home to approximately 2.6 million people and encompasses 25% of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Over time\, this once abundant and pristine body of water has been affected by urbanization\, agricultural land use and pollution. With outdoor educator Sarah Croscutt as our guide\, we’ll explore the environmental history and ecological diversity of the James River. With a focus on non-point source stormwater runoff and pollution\, we’ll discuss why it is important for each of us to do our part in mitigating the effects of runoff pollution in our own little corner of the watershed. We’ll take excursions into the Garden to see watershed ecosystems in action. \nFees: Member $25\, Non-Member $30 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Noble & Global: Republic of Georgia
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 and 2023\, we tasted 60+ gems from the four corners of Virginia wine country. Through those bottles\, we discovered the terroir\, varietals\, styles and stories in our own backyard. For 2024\, we’re expanding perspective to explore the noble wines of our global neighbors. Via 6 wines per class\, we’ll wend around the world with stops in hemispheres north\, south\, east and west as we delve into regions that fascinate as historic wonders\, up-and-comers or far-flung curiosities. Paired with each glass\, enjoy thoughtful small plates from Executive Chef Jared Serr themed to the region and wine. \nJoin us for an evening of flights\, bites and edutainment from renowned sommelier and author Jason Tesauro. And if you can’t make it to class\, we invite you to “remote study” by picking up select Vine to Glass bottles at Barrel Thief Wine & Provisions\, our retail partner.  (This series will continue throughout 2023 with additional dates and global locations publishing in future seasons) \nAncient Region\, Rising Tide: Republic of Georgia \nBetween the Black Sea and the High Caucuses is where Master of Wine Jancis Robinson finds\, “One of the world’s great and historic centres of both wild and cultivated vines.” Thanks in part to Russian embargoes in the past two decades\, a wine culture that’s persisted for over 8\,000 years has emerged anew to meet the wider wine-drinking world. \nFees: Member $69\, Non-Member $83 \nNote: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions\, please register more than one week before the program date.  Menus are set 1 week in advance and additional restrictions cannot be accommodated after that time.   \n\nParticipants 21 and older only. SUMMARY:The Northside Painters | Spring Artshow
DESCRIPTION:About Brenda Stankus \nNature and people fascinate me\, from organic debris to flowers in bloom\, to the hidden image\, particularly paintings of women doing ordinary things extraordinarily. She has painted both true botanical representations and imaginary possibilities. “I love to combine surfaces with unusual painting procedures to capture what I see and present it in unusual ways.” \n“Beauty can be transformative\, whether in harmony or discord\, and this makes working with the wonders of the organic world most exciting. There is enormous beauty not only in flower blossoms\, but equally as much in the lichen on tree bark\, in a garlic pod\, in dried vegetables and plant debris…not to mention the unfurling of a pod as it moves from seedpod to its full form. Can we capture a new beauty often missed? The inspiration is endless!!” \nAlways fascinated by nature and people\, Brenda started her professional career with children’s portraits in watercolor and then women in sculpture and back to painting\, her first love!   She strives to communicate opportunity to her students as well as painting techniques and savvy. \nBrenda’s work is in private and corporate collections throughout the nation\, including several large format works in lobbies of high-rise multi-use buildings in cities like Manhattan and Washington\, D.C. Solo exhibits at venues such as Union Station in D.C.\, the Javits Center in New York\, and locally at the University of Richmond have kept the journey exciting.\n \nIncluded with regular Garden admission\, free for members.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Graphite Shading: Drawing Demo with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo aims to provide all the theoretical and practical tools necessary for beginners to initiate their practice and for intermediate students to improve their skills in graphite shading. We start from a basic understanding of the very mechanics of how graphite works\, as well as the importance of the texture of the paper and the sharpness of the pencil\, and how these aspects influence our intended result. We also address different ways to hold the pencil and the variety of motions used to produce the shading. From that understanding\, we expand our objectives and practice the visual apprehension of tonal values seen in nature in order to represent them accurately\, by aiming for the simplest approach. Once we master visual comprehension\, our hands will follow and begin to practice how to faithfully represent what we see with all its delicate nuances and subtle shifts. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Learn about the different types and qualities of graphite\, and how and when to use them \n–Explore the different results that can be achieved according to the techniques and materials used \n–Investigate the essential role of accurate observation associated with a simple system of progressive depiction of shades \n–Understand how to achieve precision and uniformity of lines and edges \n–Practice rendering smooth and beautiful gradients and how to make eventual corrections to them \n–Examine methods for correcting errors and avoiding causing severe damage to the paper and finishing \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. A basic understanding of drawing principles is recommended\, but all who wish to learn and explore are welcome. Students who want or need some introduction to graphite techniques prior to taking this course can find support in a free guidebook and a video tutorial provided by the instructor. \nFees: Member $164\, Non-Member $197 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:The Legacy of Black Herbalism
DESCRIPTION:When enslaved Africans were brought to America\, many of their traditions were taken away from them once they arrived. One exception to this rule\, however\, is the legacy of herbalism for their medicinal\, dietary and cultural usage. Plants such as cotton\, black walnut\, witch-hazel and dogwood were used for a variety of purposes in their communities. Debra Freeman\, food anthropologist\, writer\, and podcaster\, will guide you through this rich history. \nWe believe that all adults in our community should have access to plant-based\, nature-focused learning opportunities. We offer several pricing tiers so you can register at the amount you’re able to pay. Thank you for your contribution\, which helps cover the costs for this educational opportunity. If you wish to support\, please select the circled checkmark under the word Donate\, and then select your contribution amount. \n• Sustainer: $45\n• Supporter: $30\n• Contributor: $15\n• Attendee: $0 \nAll programs are subject to change.
