SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Graphite Shading with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo aims to provide all the theoretical and practical tools necessary for beginners to initiate their practice and for intermediate students to improve their skills in graphite shading. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. We start from a basic understanding of the very mechanics of how graphite works\, as well as the importance of the texture of the paper and the sharpness of the pencil\, and how these aspects influence our intended result. We also address different ways to hold the pencil and the variety of motions used to produce the shading. From that understanding\, we expand our objectives and practice the visual apprehension of tonal values seen in nature in order to represent them accurately\, by aiming for the simplest approach. Once we master visual comprehension\, our hands will follow and begin to practice how to faithfully represent what we see with all its delicate nuances and subtle shifts. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Learn about the different types and qualities of graphite\, and how and when to use them \n–Explore the different results that can be achieved according to the techniques and materials used \n–Investigate the essential role of accurate observation associated with a simple system of progressive depiction of shades \n–Understand how to achieve precision and uniformity of lines and edges \n–Practice rendering smooth and beautiful gradients and how to make eventual corrections to them \n–Examine methods for correcting errors and avoiding causing severe damage to the paper and finishing \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. A practical understanding of analytical drawing and of the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade is recommended\, but all are welcome. Students who want a refresher on graphite techniques prior to taking this course can find support in a free guidebook and a video tutorial provided by the instructor. \nFees: Member $164\, Non-Member $197 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Bordeaux (Inspired) Blends
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 and 2023\, we tasted 60+ gems from the four corners of Virginia wine country. Through those bottles\, we discovered the terroir\, varietals\, styles and stories in our own backyard. For 2024\, we’re expanding perspective to explore the noble wines of our global neighbors. Via 6 wines per class\, we’ll wend around the world with stops in hemispheres north\, south\, east and west as we delve into regions that fascinate as historic wonders\, up-and-comers or far-flung curiosities. Paired with each glass\, enjoy thoughtful small plates from Executive Chef Jared Serr themed to the region and wine. \nJoin us for an evening of flights\, bites and edutainment from renowned sommelier and author Jason Tesauro. And if you can’t make it to class\, we invite you to “remote study” by picking up select Vine to Glass bottles at Barrel Thief Wine & Provisions\, our retail partner.  (This series will continue throughout 2023 with additional dates and global locations publishing in future seasons) \nBordeaux (Inspired) Blends: Racy and Lacy Reds\nKnown by many names – Claret\, red blend\, Meritage – the Bordeaux blend and its offshoots define a pinnacle of the winemaker’s craft: blending. SUMMARY:The Story of Invasive Plants and How to Remove Them
DESCRIPTION:From the time of early exploration\, collecting and sharing newly discovered species has impacted our gardens and\, in many cases\, our ecosystems as “New and Unusual” plants spread beyond the garden gate to invade our natural areas. Today\, few know of the struggles gardeners endured for centuries as they strived to move viable seeds and live plants around the world. In this class with horticulturist and Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann\, learn how the seed catalog came to be\, how catalogs influenced our society\, and how advances in transportation increased access to different plants. These components help us understand how alien and invasive species were moved around the globe as gardeners\, like us\, desired to grow a plant no one else had. Peggy will also share guidance on how to remove invasive plants growing in your home landscape. Class will begin indoors before moving out into the Garden to spot examples of invasive plants growing on Garden property\, weather-permitting. \nFees: Member $30\, Non-Member $36 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Rendering Textures in Graphite with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:A drawing done purely in graphite can\, by its very nature\, provide a spectacular result in botanical art and illustration. In addition\, mastering the graphite technique yields us the tools for a detailed investigation of the subject by doing previous studies\, so we can grasp the essentials of light and shade before working with other media such as colored pencils\, pen and ink\, or watercolors. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo offers the fundamentals of light and shade\, but focuses specifically on the richness of textures found in nature with all their diversity\, and how to represent them artistically either using only graphite on white paper or graphite plus a light-colored pencil on toned paper. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Understand the behavior of light which generates the effect of textures when reflected by the objects\, and to correctly represent it \n–Examine how the quality of reflectivity of an object is intrinsically linked to our presumed tactile sensation \n–Work from a “general” to “particular” view\, learning tricks to avoid wasting time \n–Investigate\, understand and correctly represent the surfaces’ microstructure in order to achieve an accurate overall effect \n–Comprehend the universal systems of shading that work for rendering most textures \n–Achieve summarized and balanced simplicity when representing complex patterns \n–Learn and use accessory tools that allow for handy and easy ways to render certain patterns \n–Understand how to accurately observe and represent conspicuous and subtle aspects of the patterns seen in feathers\, fur\, thorns\, hairs\, scales\, ridges\, knobs\, grooves\, cavities\, striations\, clumps\, grasses\, trees\, groves\, etc. \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. Students who are not enrolled in the certificate program may also register for this course. Students who want a refresher on graphite techniques prior to taking this course can find support in a free guidebook and a video tutorial provided by the instructor. \n\nFees: Member $290\, Non-Member $348 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
