Through those bottles\, we discovered the terroir\, varietals\, styles and stories in our own backyard. For 2024\, we’re expanding perspective to explore the noble wines of our global neighbors. Via 6 wines per class\, we’ll wend around the world with stops in hemispheres north\, south\, east and west as we delve into regions that fascinate as historic wonders\, up-and-comers or far-flung curiosities. Paired with each glass\, enjoy thoughtful small plates from Executive Chef Jared Serr themed to the region and wine. \nJoin us for an evening of flights\, bites and edutainment from renowned sommelier and author Jason Tesauro. DESCRIPTION:From the time of early exploration\, collecting and sharing newly discovered species has impacted our gardens and\, in many cases\, our ecosystems as “New and Unusual” plants spread beyond the garden gate to invade our natural areas. Today\, few know of the struggles gardeners endured for centuries as they strived to move viable seeds and live plants around the world. In this class with horticulturist and Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann\, learn how the seed catalog came to be\, how catalogs influenced our society\, and how advances in transportation increased access to different plants. These components help us understand how alien and invasive species were moved around the globe as gardeners\, like us\, desired to grow a plant no one else had. Peggy will also share guidance on how to remove invasive plants growing in your home landscape. In session one\, we will explore the properties of Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and effects using different substrates. Students will practice techniques of layering\, blending\, burnishing\, and edge clean-up while rendering small botanical subjects. In session two\, we will render a completed work from color-matching to under-drawing\, to layering\, burnishing\, and finishing. An herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens used for scientific study\, among other things. Dive into the history of herbarium collections and the roles that herbarium collections play in the service of botanical science. Learn the art and science of pressing plants for preservation and receive guidance on how to start your own backyard herbarium. Journey to the basement of the Kelly Education Center for an exclusive tour of the Garden’s herbarium. \nAs class comes to a close\, explore the Women’s Work exhibit in the Library. The exhibit showcases the work of Works Progress Administration workers (many of them African American women) who planted the Lee Park Wildflower and Bird Sanctuary (now called Legends Park and Nature Sanctuary)\, in addition to creating an herbarium of pressed specimens—a collection now housed by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and on display through Labor Day 2024. \nWe believe that all adults in our community should have access to plant-based\, nature-focused learning opportunities. SUMMARY:Rendering Textures in Graphite with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:A drawing done purely in graphite can\, by its very nature\, provide a spectacular result in botanical art and illustration. In addition\, mastering the graphite technique yields us the tools for a detailed investigation of the subject by doing previous studies\, so we can grasp the essentials of light and shade before working with other media such as colored pencils\, pen and ink\, or watercolors. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo offers the fundamentals of light and shade\, but focuses specifically on the richness of textures found in nature with all their diversity\, and how to represent them artistically either using only graphite on white paper or graphite plus a light-colored pencil on toned paper. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Understand the behavior of light which generates the effect of textures when reflected by the objects\, and to correctly represent it \n–Examine how the quality of reflectivity of an object is intrinsically linked to our presumed tactile sensation \n–Work from a “general” to “particular” view\, learning tricks to avoid wasting time \n–Investigate\, understand and correctly represent the surfaces’ microstructure in order to achieve an accurate overall effect \n–Comprehend the universal systems of shading that work for rendering most textures \n–Achieve summarized and balanced simplicity when representing complex patterns \n–Learn and use accessory tools that allow for handy and easy ways to render certain patterns \n–Understand how to accurately observe and represent conspicuous and subtle aspects of the patterns seen in feathers\, fur\, thorns\, hairs\, scales\, ridges\, knobs\, grooves\, cavities\, striations\, clumps\, grasses\, trees\, groves\, etc. \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. DESCRIPTION:Join horticulturist and Sri Lankan native Menaka Dewasinghe for an introduction to exotic tropical fruits available at many stores in the Richmond region. Tropical fruits\, known for concentrated and mouthwatering aromas and flavors\, are produced by trees native to hot and humid climates or equatorial areas. Learn about ways to add more tropical fruits to your diet\, including how to properly prepare raw and cooked fruit varieties\, all while receiving some delicious recipes. Watch as Menaka demonstrates how to prepare some of these fruits live in class\, and taste samples of the fabulous flavors in a variety of dishes. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of how to cook with fruits like Mango\, Papaya\, Durian\, Rambutan\, Jackfruit\, Pineapple\, Banana\, Dragon fruit\, Lychee\, Guava and Mangusteen\, as well as the nutritional benefits of these fruits. \nFees: Member $34\, Non-Member $39 \nAll programs are subject to change. DESCRIPTION:During the Victorian era\, flower arranging was taught and recognized as an art in Western culture\, making it an important period in the history of floral design. Join floral designer David Pippin for a workshop that will combine history with hands-on floral arranging as you explore the history of floral design in the Victorian era. Create and take home a Victorian style centerpiece using a variety of cut flowers and foliage that would have been popular during that period. \nArrive early so you can visit the Victorian-inspired horticultural display that will be in the Grace Arents Garden as part of our 40th Anniversary celebration! The display will tell stories of how horticulture has evolved and continues to change.
