SUMMARY:PATHS AROUND THE GLASS: A TOUR OF RESILIENT BEAUTY: MAY 26
DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the Conservatory and tour the new Garden areas added as part of the Conservatory expansion. “Paths Around the Glass” is a guided outdoor tour that showcases the plants that can not only thrive in Richmond’s climate\, but are designed to provide food and shelter for insects and wildlife. You will discover the adaptive design techniques used to create the varied areas around the conservatory\, including: a hillside garden\, a parterre meadow\, a new courtyard for gatherings\, and aquatic plants and paths around the new lake area. As you go through the spaces\, you will discover a rich variety of plants that are primarily native and are well-suited for this environment from evergreens to hardy perennials that return each year. The landscape is designed for resilience\, transitioning from formal irrigated garden beds to more natural environments that rely on drought-tolerant and self-sustaining plantings that can thrive throughout the year. This tour will begin on the steps at the entrance to the Conservatory. Enter through the Visitors Center and check in with Guest Services prior to the tour.       \nALL TOURS ARE NOW OFFERED AS DROP-IN ONLY AND DO NOT REQUIRE REGISTRATION. THIS TOUR IS FIRST COME\, FIRST SERVED AND IS LIMITED TO 35 PARTICIPANTS. \nFees: Member $0\, Non-Members pay regular Garden admission. \nAll programs are subject to change. NO pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact MeganC@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Botany
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Douglas DeBerry for an in-depth overview of the tools and techniques used by botanists to identify plants to the species level\, with a strong emphasis on family characteristics. Attendees will be exposed to concepts in plant classification\, nomenclature\, habitat\, distribution\, and of course\, vegetative and reproductive characteristics—all of which can be used to help identify plants to the species level. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. An important focus of the course will be on empowering attendees to “dismantle” the seemingly endless complex of scientific terminology surrounding plant identification. This course will include a mix of time for lectures\, labs\, and field practicums. Attendees should be prepared for some fieldwork homework assignments. \nFees: Member: $222\, Non-Member: $278 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact registrar@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Summer Session — Drawing in Practice: Integrating Form & Fluency
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever spent hours working on a drawing\, carefully applying techniques like sketching\, shading\, or measuring proportions\, yet the result still doesn’t come together the way you imagined? Most students assume the solution is to learn more techniques. But often what’s missing is something more fundamental: understanding how the drawing process itself works. Knowing how observation\, interpretation\, and mark-making work together is essential for creating the work you envision and becoming a more proficient botanical artist. \nThis class provides the time and guidance to practice that process deliberately\, allowing the relationship between observation\, interpretation\, and mark-making to mature. Each session begins with short observational warm-ups designed to synchronize the eye–brain–hand loop and sharpen one of your most valuable creative tools as a botanical artist. Working both in the garden (weather permitting) and in the studio\, we will explore practical ways to build form through contour\, cross-contour\, plane shifts\, light\, and shading. \nAs drawings develop\, we will also practice evaluating what is happening on the page—learning how to recognize when a drawing stalls\, why it happens\, and how to identify solutions that move the work forward. Confidence grows through this process. It doesn’t come from waiting until you know exactly what to do or from collecting more techniques. It develops through critical thinking\, adjustment\, and sustained engagement with the work. After all\, drawing isn’t magic—it’s simply marks on paper. Every drawing emerges line by line through a series of decisions. When you learn how to guide those decisions\, the process becomes clearer\, more enjoyable and your drawings begin to grow with it. \nBecause drawing fluency develops through sustained practice\, this class is designed to be taken more than once. Each session offers new subjects\, new observations\, and new opportunities to refine your personal drawing process. \nStudents supply materials. Click on the link below in the Event Details section for the list of required materials. \n\nFees: Member $291\, Non-Member $359 \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Blossoms and Bugs
DESCRIPTION:There are intricate\, symbiotic relationships between vibrant flowers and their vital insect partners. While it is easy to marvel at the beauty of flowers\, insects are often misunderstood and spark different reactions. \nThis exhibition juxtaposes artistic beauty with ecological importance. Using the bold color palette and amplified details associated with Pop Art\, each painting magnifies the subtle details of nature\, highlighting the beauty of both blossoms and bugs. At times\, scientific accuracy gives way to artistic interpretation\, inviting viewers to appreciate the overlooked beauty and quiet intricacies of the natural world. \nBees\, butterflies\, and ladybugs are pollinators – the heroes of the garden – responsible for turning blossoms into fruits. Beetles and other Coleoptera make up the largest order of the animal kingdom\, with over 350\,000 known species. They support soil health and plant growth by enhancing soil structure\, managing pests\, and recycling nutrients through activities like burrowing\, feeding\, and decomposition. \nBlossoms and Bugs invites viewers to enjoy the natural beauty around us and cultivate a deeper sense of wonder and appreciation for nature’s essential partners. \n

SUMMARY:Beautiful Blooms and Abstract Patterns
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop where fun is far more important than perfection\, you will create an abstracted painting using acrylic paints on canvas\, inspired by floral photographs taken at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The focus is on translating natural forms into expressive shapes\, colors\, and textures rather than painting literal realism. Participants will explore color mixing\, layering\, mark-making\, and the use of texture and negative space to create balance\, movement\, and visual interest. Emphasis is placed on intuitive composition—learning when to add\, when to simplify\, and how negative space can be just as powerful as the primary subject matter. The workshop welcomes all experience levels and encourages experimentation\, play\, and personal interpretation. This workshop will be led by Shelley Row\, an LGBG instructor\, along with her fellow retired art educator\, artist\, and lifelong friend\, Sarah Matthews. Together\, they bring decades of shared experience and a genuine love of teaching. All materials are provided. You’ll leave with a finished piece\, along with new techniques and renewed confidence in your creative process. No prior painting experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity. \nFees: Member $90\, Non-Member $113 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:PATHS AROUND THE GLASS: A TOUR OF RESILIENT BEAUTY: JUNE 23
The landscape is designed for resilience\, transitioning from formal irrigated garden beds to more natural environments that rely on drought-tolerant and self-sustaining plantings that can thrive throughout the year. SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Sipping the Sun: A Masterclass in Mediterranean Terroir
DESCRIPTION:The Concept: Step into the light of the world’s most iconic coastal vineyards. This masterclass strips away the label and focuses on the elemental forces that define the Mediterranean glass: scorching sun\, cooling sea breezes\, and ancient\, rugged soils. From the limestone cliffs of the Levant to the windswept volcanic slopes of the Aegean\, you will discover how “”Liquid Sunlight”” is captured\, structured\, and served. \nThe Experience: We will move beyond the glass to explore the molecular harmony between the vine and the table. You will learn to decode a wine’s architecture—its bracing salinity\, its sun-drenched textures\, and its savory herbal core—and how these traits allow it to dominate the boldest flavors of coastal cuisine. This is a deep dive into wines born of heat but defined by their incredible freshness and poise. \n\nWhat You Will Master:\n• The Coastal Profile: How proximity to the sea creates wines with a distinct\, mouthwatering “”brine”” and mineral tension.\n• The Art of Structure: Learning to balance high-intensity fats and wild herbs with wines of significant weight and phenolic grip.\n• Old World vs. New World: A side-by-side exploration of ancestral traditions in the Mediterranean basin against the modern\, innovative interpretations of the Pacific Coast and the Southern Hemisphere.\n• The “Garrigue” Connection: Identifying the savory\, scrub-brush aromatics that create a natural bridge between the vineyard and the kitchen. \nThe Atmosphere: Guided by Sommelier & Wine Director Justin Ferguson\, this session is designed for the curious and the adventurous. Whether you are looking to elevate your weeknight dining or curate a world-class cellar\, you will leave with a professional framework for understanding why these sun-kissed regions produce the most versatile food wines on the planet. \nAll-inclusive fee covers tasting of 6 wines\, an elegant and delicious 6-course dinner\, complimentary wine glass and gratuity. \nFees: Member $90\, Non-Member $108 \nNote: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions\, please register more than one week before the program date and indicate your dietary needs during registration. Menus are set 1 week in advance and additional restrictions cannot be accommodated after that time.   \nParticipants 21 and older only. All programs are subject to change.  Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
