SUMMARY:Rendering Textures in Graphite with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:A drawing done purely in graphite can\, by its very nature\, provide a spectacular result in botanical art and illustration. In addition\, mastering the graphite technique yields us the tools for a detailed investigation of the subject by doing previous studies\, so we can grasp the essentials of light and shade before working with other media such as colored pencils\, pen and ink\, or watercolors. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo offers the fundamentals of light and shade\, but focuses specifically on the richness of textures found in nature with all their diversity\, and how to represent them artistically either using only graphite on white paper or graphite plus a light-colored pencil on toned paper. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Understand the behavior of light which generates the effect of textures when reflected by the objects\, and to correctly represent it \n–Examine how the quality of reflectivity of an object is intrinsically linked to our presumed tactile sensation \n–Work from a “general” to “particular” view\, learning tricks to avoid wasting time \n–Investigate\, understand and correctly represent the surfaces’ microstructure in order to achieve an accurate overall effect \n–Comprehend the universal systems of shading that work for rendering most textures \n–Achieve summarized and balanced simplicity when representing complex patterns \n–Learn and use accessory tools that allow for handy and easy ways to render certain patterns \n–Understand how to accurately observe and represent conspicuous and subtle aspects of the patterns seen in feathers\, fur\, thorns\, hairs\, scales\, ridges\, knobs\, grooves\, cavities\, striations\, clumps\, grasses\, trees\, groves\, etc. \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. This class\, taught by Jesse Frierson of East Coast Honey\, is tailored for beginner to fourth-year beekeepers as an enhancement to get you going again and help to refine your beekeeping skills. During this in-depth\, one-day session\, participants will get a solid refresher about beekeeping best practices and will learn many “tips of the trade” in helping to enhance your results in 2024 and as you begin preparations for the 2025 season. \nBring your list of the toughest questions and get the knowledge\, information\, and seasoned guidance you need after your inaugural beekeeper experiences—be they good\, bad\, or not-so-good. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling: Observing Native Bees of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever noticed small half circles cut into your plants’ leaves? “Leaf cutter” bees do that. Despite their circular excavations\, this native bee is small\, docile\, and solitary. Leaf cutter bees are one of the essential native pollinators in our gardens that contribute to the ecosystem. Virginia is home to over 400 species of bees\, spread across six family groups. Your Elderberry’s pithy stems may even be home to some of them. Although we can’t cover all 400+ native bee species in this course\, Stephey Baker\, local artist and avid urban gardener\, will introduce you to some spectacularly colorful buzzing beasties. Learn how to observe our native bees and use that knowledge creatively in a nature journal. To help you record your discoveries\, step-by-step instructions will be provided. Foster an appreciation for our native bee species and inspire creative journaling!  \nYou don’t have to be an artist\, a writer\, or a gardener to journal about the natural world. There are no artistic skills required to participate. SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Painting Birds
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual course\, award-winning artist Patricia Savage guides students in the drybrush watercolor method utilized by scientific illustrators. On Days 1 and 2\, students will study the anatomy of the bird’s skull\, feet\, wings and feather groups using photographic specimens on loan from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and handouts provided by the instructor. On Days 3 and 4\, students will receive instruction on how to create value gradations\, color temperature\, chroma and matching color while painting their own bird. Students may not leave the course with a completed painting of a bird\, but they will have a start to continue working on in their own time using what they’ve learned. Some previous watercolor experience is recommended\, but not required. DESCRIPTION:August and September will expose the final phase called “Flourish.” Guests can use cutting-edge technologies to interact with the Garden in an entirely different way. \n“The Secret Garden Legacy Adventure” geocache experience guides participants through the historic Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, once nurtured by Grace Arents\, on a journey of waypoints and riddles. Designed for both novices and experienced participants\, this journey can be guided by instructors and guardians using the provided riddle clues or enjoyed at a leisurely pace by groups and individuals. \nKyle has additionally brought the garden to life in a brand-new way with his final exhibition\, Blooms of Light. Experience radiant\, oscillating artworks in the sky through augmented reality with just your smartphone and eyes. The shifting\, weaving patterns of his final artistic bow will leave you awestruck in the lush garden landscape.

SUMMARY:Botanic Gardens: Seizing the Moment While Imagining the Future
DESCRIPTION:This year marks four decades of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, and we’re celebrating for the whole year with favorite events as well as exciting new ones. Through our 40th Anniversary theme\, “Flourish”\, our goal is to honor the work that has come before\, celebrate where we are now\, and look forward to the transformational changes kicking off in 2024. Our anniversary programming includes a special Speaker Series highlighting the Garden’s past\, present\, and future.   \nExplore the role of public gardens and the importance of making green space and gardens accessible to the community with Oak Spring Garden Foundation President\, Sir Peter Crane. Discussion will center on the opportunities that public gardens must seize to remain relevant while doing more to address important societal concerns\, especially around the environment. A Q&A will follow his presentation\, as will the chance to explore the 40th anniversary Flourish displays and meet our talented horticulture staff. Bloemendaal House will be open with light refreshments and volunteer Garden Guides available to highlight the history of the house and property.  \nEvent Schedule: \n2-3 pm: Lecture and Q&A in the Auditorium  \n3-4 pm: Explore the Garden to experience each of the Flourish displays\, where Horticulture staff will be available to highlight their design work and answer questions. Bloemendaal House will be the final destination\, where we will have light refreshments and an opportunity to learn more about this historic part of our property.  \nFees: Member $15\, Non-Member $35 \nAll programs are subject to change. Or that some male butterflies perform a special dance to attract a female mate? If you’re looking to learn about how and why insects behave the way they do\, this class is for you! Each participant will receive multiple informational handouts\, an insect observation journal\, and one native pollinator plant to bring home. DESCRIPTION:If you are looking for inspiration and guidance in creating a refuge for wildlife in your backyard\, then you’re in the right place! This course will teach you how to incorporate native plants into your landscape through site evaluation and how to place the right plant in the right place. We’ll discuss specific trees\, shrubs\, perennials\, grasses and vines\, along with how each plant interacts with nature and which wildlife they would support and attract. You’ll learn how to identify invasive species growing on your property.
