SUMMARY:Rendering Textures in Graphite with International Artist Rogério Lupo
DESCRIPTION:A drawing done purely in graphite can\, by its very nature\, provide a spectacular result in botanical art and illustration. In addition\, mastering the graphite technique yields us the tools for a detailed investigation of the subject by doing previous studies\, so we can grasp the essentials of light and shade before working with other media such as colored pencils\, pen and ink\, or watercolors. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo offers the fundamentals of light and shade\, but focuses specifically on the richness of textures found in nature with all their diversity\, and how to represent them artistically either using only graphite on white paper or graphite plus a light-colored pencil on toned paper. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nIn this course\, you will: \n–Understand the behavior of light which generates the effect of textures when reflected by the objects\, and to correctly represent it \n–Examine how the quality of reflectivity of an object is intrinsically linked to our presumed tactile sensation \n–Work from a “general” to “particular” view\, learning tricks to avoid wasting time \n–Investigate\, understand and correctly represent the surfaces’ microstructure in order to achieve an accurate overall effect \n–Comprehend the universal systems of shading that work for rendering most textures \n–Achieve summarized and balanced simplicity when representing complex patterns \n–Learn and use accessory tools that allow for handy and easy ways to render certain patterns \n–Understand how to accurately observe and represent conspicuous and subtle aspects of the patterns seen in feathers\, fur\, thorns\, hairs\, scales\, ridges\, knobs\, grooves\, cavities\, striations\, clumps\, grasses\, trees\, groves\, etc. \nThis course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. Students who are not enrolled in the certificate program may also register for this course. Students who want a refresher on graphite techniques prior to taking this course can find support in a free guidebook and a video tutorial provided by the instructor. \n\nFees: Member $290\, Non-Member $348 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Exploring Cacao Theobroma & Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Pop quiz time! \n1. What is cacao and where does it come from? \n2. When did this plant become so prominent in our diets? \n3. How does it grow and what are cacao’s growing needs? \n4. Bonus question: Why don’t chocolate bars grow on trees? \nIf you’re curious about the answers to these questions and want to learn about cacao from a true professional who used to grow cacao in Hawaii\, then you don’t want to miss this class! Conservatory Horticulturist\, Jayton Howard\, will have you feeling like an expert by the end of class. As part of the cacao experience\, you’ll get the chance to taste chocolate in a whole new way. We’ll snack on cacao nibs\, feel the benefits of cacao butter on our skin\, and see what a fresh cacao pod is like inside and out! We’ll compare tasty chocolates with the taste of raw cacao fruit and develop our pallets to a whole level of chocolate appreciation. \nThink you have what it takes to grow cacao as a house plant? You’ll get the opportunity to plant a fresh cacao bean and watch it emerge into a baby cacao tree in a matter of weeks and learn everything you need to keep it growing. Jayton will also provide an exclusive guided tour of some of the Conservatory’s tropical plants\, with special focus on our cacao tree. Due to the limited blooming cycle of our cacao tree and planned construction on the Conservatory coming in 2025\, this is the last chance to take this class for a while! \nFees: Member $37\, Non-Member $44 \nAll programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling: Observing Native Bees of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever noticed small half circles cut into your plants’ leaves? “Leaf cutter” bees do that. Despite their circular excavations\, this native bee is small\, docile\, and solitary. Leaf cutter bees are one of the essential native pollinators in our gardens that contribute to the ecosystem. Virginia is home to over 400 species of bees\, spread across six family groups. Your Elderberry’s pithy stems may even be home to some of them. Although we can’t cover all 400+ native bee species in this course\, Stephey Baker\, local artist and avid urban gardener\, will introduce you to some spectacularly colorful buzzing beasties. Learn how to observe our native bees and use that knowledge creatively in a nature journal. To help you record your discoveries\, step-by-step instructions will be provided. Foster an appreciation for our native bee species and inspire creative journaling! \nYou don’t have to be an artist\, a writer\, or a gardener to journal about the natural world. There are no artistic skills required to participate. From this course\, you will: \n–Learn how to observe native bees and record your observations in a nature journal  \n–Discover the life cycle and habitat requirements of native bees (some live underground\, in fallen wood\, and even in Elderberry bushes!) \n–Understand how to differentiate honey bees from native bees\, bumble bees\, and carpenter bees and explore the best resources for identifying bees \n–Explore bee anatomy by creating a diagram in your journal \n–Discover how to participate in free citizen science projects and make a difference in native bee conservation. Small changes can make a big difference in ensuring these important pollinators continue to thrive! \nInterested in the Botanical Illustration Certificate program?  While new enrollments are on hold\, this course offers guidance on how to cultivate your observational skills\, which are essential in Botanical Illustration\, and is one way to continue your artistic journey in the meantime. \n\nFees: Member $80\, Non-Member $95 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Wines of Swartland\, South Africa
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 and 2023\, we tasted 60+ gems from the four corners of Virginia wine country. Through those bottles\, we discovered the terroir\, varietals\, styles and stories in our own backyard. For 2024\, we’re expanding perspective to explore the noble wines of our global neighbors. Via 6 wines per class\, we’ll wend around the world with stops in hemispheres north\, south\, east and west as we delve into regions that fascinate as historic wonders\, up-and-comers or far-flung curiosities. Paired with each glass\, enjoy thoughtful small plates from Executive Chef Jared Serr themed to the region and wine. \nJoin us for an evening of flights\, bites and edutainment from renowned sommelier and author Jason Tesauro. And if you can’t make it to class\, we invite you to “remote study” by picking up select Vine to Glass bottles at Barrel Thief Wine & Provisions\, our retail partner.  (This series will continue throughout 2023 with additional dates and global locations publishing in future seasons) \nRevolutionaries in the Coastal Bush: Wines of Swartland\, South Africa\nIf South African wine conjures the over-oak and glitz of postcard-perfect Cape Winelands\, wild Swartland is your down and dirty natural antidote. In lieu of consumerism\, Swartland is driven by craft\, collaboration\, and beguiling quality. This hot\, rugged\, dry land harbors old-vine bush-vines which imbue wines with intense concentration and expression worth knowing. \nFees: Member $76\, Non-Member $92 \nNote: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions\, please register more than one week before the program date.  Menus are set 1 week in advance and additional restrictions cannot be accommodated after that time.   \n\nParticipants 21 and older only. All programs are subject to change.  Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
