SUMMARY:Nature Journaling: Observing Native Bees of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever noticed small half circles cut into your plants’ leaves? “Leaf cutter” bees do that. Despite their circular excavations\, this native bee is small\, docile\, and solitary. Leaf cutter bees are one of the essential native pollinators in our gardens that contribute to the ecosystem. Virginia is home to over 400 species of bees\, spread across six family groups. Your Elderberry’s pithy stems may even be home to some of them. Although we can’t cover all 400+ native bee species in this course\, Stephey Baker\, local artist and avid urban gardener\, will introduce you to some spectacularly colorful buzzing beasties. Learn how to observe our native bees and use that knowledge creatively in a nature journal. To help you record your discoveries\, step-by-step instructions will be provided. Foster an appreciation for our native bee species and inspire creative journaling! \nYou don’t have to be an artist\, a writer\, or a gardener to journal about the natural world. There are no artistic skills required to participate. From this course\, you will: \n–Learn how to observe native bees and record your observations in a nature journal  \n–Discover the life cycle and habitat requirements of native bees (some live underground\, in fallen wood\, and even in Elderberry bushes!) \n–Understand how to differentiate honey bees from native bees\, bumble bees\, and carpenter bees and explore the best resources for identifying bees \n–Explore bee anatomy by creating a diagram in your journal \n–Discover how to participate in free citizen science projects and make a difference in native bee conservation. Small changes can make a big difference in ensuring these important pollinators continue to thrive! \nInterested in the Botanical Illustration Certificate program?  While new enrollments are on hold\, this course offers guidance on how to cultivate your observational skills\, which are essential in Botanical Illustration\, and is one way to continue your artistic journey in the meantime. \n\nFees: Member $80\, Non-Member $95 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact SarahW@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Vine to Glass: Wines of Swartland\, South Africa
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 and 2023\, we tasted 60+ gems from the four corners of Virginia wine country. Through those bottles\, we discovered the terroir\, varietals\, styles and stories in our own backyard. For 2024\, we’re expanding perspective to explore the noble wines of our global neighbors. Via 6 wines per class\, we’ll wend around the world with stops in hemispheres north\, south\, east and west as we delve into regions that fascinate as historic wonders\, up-and-comers or far-flung curiosities. Paired with each glass\, enjoy thoughtful small plates from Executive Chef Jared Serr themed to the region and wine. \nJoin us for an evening of flights\, bites and edutainment from renowned sommelier and author Jason Tesauro. And if you can’t make it to class\, we invite you to “remote study” by picking up select Vine to Glass bottles at Barrel Thief Wine & Provisions\, our retail partner.  (This series will continue throughout 2023 with additional dates and global locations publishing in future seasons) \nRevolutionaries in the Coastal Bush: Wines of Swartland\, South Africa\nIf South African wine conjures the over-oak and glitz of postcard-perfect Cape Winelands\, wild Swartland is your down and dirty natural antidote. In lieu of consumerism\, Swartland is driven by craft\, collaboration\, and beguiling quality. This hot\, rugged\, dry land harbors old-vine bush-vines which imbue wines with intense concentration and expression worth knowing. \nFees: Member $76\, Non-Member $92 \nNote: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions\, please register more than one week before the program date.  Menus are set 1 week in advance and additional restrictions cannot be accommodated after that time.   \n\nParticipants 21 and older only. All programs are subject to change.  Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Color Mixing for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:It can seem watercolor painting needs only water + watercolor paint. Mix them together\, apply to paper with a brush and voila! It’s not quite that simple. It is essential for watercolor artists to observe and recreate the highlights\, mid-tones\, and shadows of specimens in a variety of hues and values. The ability to manipulate the medium and utilize materials (think: water\, pigment\, paper\, brush) is essential as a watercolorist. Color theory and basic watercolor painting techniques are introduced through hands-on exercises\, including creating color gradients\, painting a basic color wheel and its grayscale counterpart\, and creating basic forms using fruits and vegetables. Along with practicing in class\, students must also practice on their own each week. The amount of time spent improving skills outside of class is up to students. For class requirements to be met\, students must complete all projects and demonstrate basic skills in the medium. Guidelines will be provided for students to follow. In between classes\, students receive support through an online classroom. Students can post their work\, ask questions\, receive feedback from instructors and peers\, review lessons via video\, and access a comprehensive color library. Creative processes that deliver results\, color matching accuracy\, and experimentation are emphasized. In a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere\, Stephey Baker will guide you through group exercises and creative discussions. \nNew! Now open to all interested students!  Don’t miss this exciting opportunity for creatives and nature journalers to learn more about everything related to seeing and creating color inspired by nature! There is no need to have prior drawing skills in realism since the exercises are guided step-by-step\, incorporating hands-on experience\, group discussion\, and observational activities. Watercolor paint is included\, but paper and brushes must be provided by the student. Students may wish to bring a sketchbook or a nature journal if they have one. \nSome materials are provided. Click on the link below in the Event Details section for additional required materials. \n\nFees: Member $201\, Non-Member $235 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Toned papers with black\, white and grayscale pigments
DESCRIPTION:Whether for quick sketches or fine-finishing artwork\, toned papers provide numerous advantages. They are quite handy in greatly reducing the difficult work of applying midtones–the most time-consuming in most media. In addition\, white pigment for highlights and other light values appears more realistic and\, when desired\, can really pop! Toned papers can also be great teachers\, as they convey invaluable lessons about contrast and the relativity of light\, shade and reflections. To use this paper correctly\, however\, the artist must take its very tonal value into account\, so that it makes a large contribution to the final result. Excessive use of white pigment might give the impression that the subject is sprinkled with flour or snow\, whereas low usage of the paper’s midtones might result in the subject appearing metallic\, overly shiny\, odd\, or even unreal. Explore the potential as well as the challenges of this technique\, and learn essential tips for achieving moderation and balance that will take your art to whole new level! \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $220\, Non-Member $264 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Introduction to Ikenobo Ikebana
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the art of Japanese flower arrangement\, was introduced by the Buddhist monks in the mid 6th century through their floral offerings in the temples. They began teaching the art in the 14th century to nobility\, shoguns\, samurai and merchants. The principles focus on lines; which represent heaven\, man\, and earth; space and form. As the western world opened up to Japan so did western flowers. This new world brought great expansion of the art. Today there are over 600 schools of Ikebana. Ikenobo is the first school with records of instruction to create this art. The first step towards enjoying this Japanese art is to understand the basic principles that will be shared in this class. This is the first of a series of Ikebana classes introducing students to the various schools of Ikebana that are practiced in Ikebana of Richmond. This instruction will give you the ability to begin enjoying this mindful art independently\, and will also allow you to progress with your skill level through further instruction as you so choose. \nFees: Member $45\, Non-Member $54 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. SUMMARY:Using the Flora of Virginia: How to Get the Most Out of the Flora and the App
DESCRIPTION:Published in 2012\, the Flora of Virginia is our long-overdue technical manual covering all of the native and naturalized plant species found in the Commonwealth. This three-day session covers essential aspects of the Flora that will help attendees successfully navigate dichotomous keys at all levels (family\, genus\, species)\, teach them how to get the information they need out of the species descriptions\, and introduce them to some other very helpful components of the book. Included will be an explanation of how and why the book is structured the way it is\, how to cross-reference different sections\, and how to minimize wasted time and “dead ends” each time the Flora is used. An in-depth review of the Flora App will be provided\, including how to use the general search functions\, graphic and technical keys\, distribution information\, and other features. Course includes lecture\, lab\, and field practicum. Attendees are required to bring a copy of the Flora or a downloaded copy of the App with them. \nFees: Member: $220\, Non-Member: $264 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. This class is cancelled.   \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
