DESCRIPTION:August and September will expose the final phase called “Flourish.” Guests can use cutting-edge technologies to interact with the Garden in an entirely different way. \n“The Secret Garden Legacy Adventure” geocache experience guides participants through the historic Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, once nurtured by Grace Arents\, on a journey of waypoints and riddles. Designed for both novices and experienced participants\, this journey can be guided by instructors and guardians using the provided riddle clues or enjoyed at a leisurely pace by groups and individuals. \nKyle has additionally brought the garden to life in a brand-new way with his final exhibition\, Blooms of Light. Experience radiant\, oscillating artworks in the sky through augmented reality with just your smartphone and eyes. The shifting\, weaving patterns of his final artistic bow will leave you awestruck in the lush garden landscape.

SUMMARY:Botanic Gardens: Seizing the Moment While Imagining the Future
DESCRIPTION:This year marks four decades of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, and we’re celebrating for the whole year with favorite events as well as exciting new ones. Through our 40th Anniversary theme\, “Flourish”\, our goal is to honor the work that has come before\, celebrate where we are now\, and look forward to the transformational changes kicking off in 2024. Our anniversary programming includes a special Speaker Series highlighting the Garden’s past\, present\, and future.   \nExplore the role of public gardens and the importance of making green space and gardens accessible to the community with Oak Spring Garden Foundation President\, Sir Peter Crane. Discussion will center on the opportunities that public gardens must seize to remain relevant while doing more to address important societal concerns\, especially around the environment. A Q&A will follow his presentation\, as will the chance to explore the 40th anniversary Flourish displays and meet our talented horticulture staff. Bloemendaal House will be open with light refreshments and volunteer Garden Guides available to highlight the history of the house and property.  \nEvent Schedule: \n2-3 pm: Lecture and Q&A in the Auditorium  \n3-4 pm: Explore the Garden to experience each of the Flourish displays\, where Horticulture staff will be available to highlight their design work and answer questions. SUMMARY:Color Mixing for Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:It can seem watercolor painting needs only water + watercolor paint. Mix them together\, apply to paper with a brush and voila! It’s not quite that simple. It is essential for watercolor artists to observe and recreate the highlights\, mid-tones\, and shadows of specimens in a variety of hues and values. The ability to manipulate the medium and utilize materials (think: water\, pigment\, paper\, brush) is essential as a watercolorist. Color theory and basic watercolor painting techniques are introduced through hands-on exercises\, including creating color gradients\, painting a basic color wheel and its grayscale counterpart\, and creating basic forms using fruits and vegetables. Along with practicing in class\, students must also practice on their own each week. The amount of time spent improving skills outside of class is up to students. For class requirements to be met\, students must complete all projects and demonstrate basic skills in the medium. Guidelines will be provided for students to follow. In between classes\, students receive support through an online classroom. Students can post their work\, ask questions\, receive feedback from instructors and peers\, review lessons via video\, and access a comprehensive color library. Creative processes that deliver results\, color matching accuracy\, and experimentation are emphasized. In a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere\, Stephey Baker will guide you through group exercises and creative discussions. \nNew! There is no need to have prior drawing skills in realism since the exercises are guided step-by-step\, incorporating hands-on experience\, group discussion\, and observational activities. DESCRIPTION:Whether for quick sketches or fine-finishing artwork\, toned papers provide numerous advantages. They are quite handy in greatly reducing the difficult work of applying midtones–the most time-consuming in most media. In addition\, white pigment for highlights and other light values appears more realistic and\, when desired\, can really pop! Toned papers can also be great teachers\, as they convey invaluable lessons about contrast and the relativity of light\, shade and reflections. To use this paper correctly\, however\, the artist must take its very tonal value into account\, so that it makes a large contribution to the final result. Excessive use of white pigment might give the impression that the subject is sprinkled with flour or snow\, whereas low usage of the paper’s midtones might result in the subject appearing metallic\, overly shiny\, odd\, or even unreal. Explore the potential as well as the challenges of this technique\, and learn essential tips for achieving moderation and balance that will take your art to whole new level! \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the art of Japanese flower arrangement\, was introduced by the Buddhist monks in the mid 6th century through their floral offerings in the temples. They began teaching the art in the 14th century to nobility\, shoguns\, samurai and merchants. The principles focus on lines; which represent heaven\, man\, and earth; space and form. As the western world opened up to Japan so did western flowers. This new world brought great expansion of the art. Today there are over 600 schools of Ikebana. Ikenobo is the first school with records of instruction to create this art. The first step towards enjoying this Japanese art is to understand the basic principles that will be shared in this class. This is the first of a series of Ikebana classes introducing students to the various schools of Ikebana that are practiced in Ikebana of Richmond. SUMMARY:40th Anniversary Speaker Series: Designing the Future
DESCRIPTION:This year marks four decades of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, and we’re celebrating for the whole year with favorite events as well as exciting new ones. Through our 40th Anniversary theme\, “Flourish”\, our goal is to honor the work that has come before\, celebrate where we are now\, and look forward to the transformational changes kicking off in 2024. Our anniversary programming includes a special Speaker Series highlighting the Garden’s past\, present\, and future. \nJoin us for a presentation by two nationally renowned landscape designers featured in the Garden’s THRIVE expansion\, which began this April. Wambui Ippolito of Wambui Design and Thomas Rainer of Phyto Studio will share the inspiration\, vision and goals for their designs:   \n     ●  The Mary Morton Parsons Courtyard\, designed in collaboration with Wambui Ippolito\, will be a formal but flexible garden space designed to support various events and exhibitions at the Garden. It sits between the Mediterranean House and the Rainforest House with framed views over the Hillside Meadow down to Sydnor Lake. The design includes reusing the brick pavers of the existing plaza and expanding its footprint to create a flexible-use terrace with moveable seating and container plantings. Additional pathways will provide connections from the Conservatory to adjacent garden spaces.   \n     ●  Ann Lee’s Meadow\, designed in collaboration with Claudia West and Thomas Rainer of Phyto Studio\, will flow from the Conservatory’s Sunset Terrace to the edges of Wick Lake with winding plantings and pathways that invite visitors to explore. Both native and non-native grasses\, perennials\, and shrubs will create a meadow with dynamic layers\, textures and colors that dance across the landscape in highly designed seasonal displays.   \nEvent Schedule: \n3-4 pm: Presentation in the Auditorium  \nFees: Member $25\, Non-Member $45 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:The Art of Natural Dye and Flower Pounding
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, you will have the opportunity to learn and practice the art of natural dyeing fabric like our ancient ancestors. We will start the class off with a visually interactive discussion about our deeply rooted history with nature and natural pigments. We will then shed some light on the current reality of the global dye industries environmental impacts and speak about how we are all capable of making a difference through awareness and education. The discussion will be followed by a hands-on eco-printing activity where the participants will have the chance to hammer dye plant material into a cotton tote bag to use as a reusable bag in their daily life. \nFees: Member $63\, Non-Member $75 \nAll programs are subject to change.
