Insider tips will be shared on selecting\, planting\, and caring for bulbs. Also covered will be the elite 50 daffodils (out of 30\,000+ registered cultivars) that are American Daffodil Society Wister Award winners\, recognized for their outstanding performance in the garden. Late fall is ideal for planting\, and so each participant will take home a special assortment of Wister Award winning bulbs donated by members and friends of the Virginia Daffodil Society. \n\nFees: Member $20\, Non-Member $25 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Introduction to Botanical Drawing III
DESCRIPTION:In Part III of the introductory botanical drawing series\, you continue to draw inspiration from nature while building on the foundations established in Parts I and II. You deepen your observational skills\, refine your interpretations\, and develop greater precision in your drawing. This course guides you in translating what you observe into marks on paper\, creating the illusion of form and cultivating a deliberate drawing practice. You study both natural and artificial light\, exploring how light direction and color temperature influence depth\, realism\, and form. Through guided exercises\, you refine your graphite shading techniques\, sharpen your artistic eye\, and create small color-matching studies using colored pencils. As the course unfolds\, you engage in shared learning experiences that inspire growth and exploration. Regular interaction and feedback help you gain new perspectives\, refine your techniques\, and strengthen your foundation for continued artistic development. By the end\, you complete a more developed drawing and build confidence as an artist—ready to carry your creative practice forward with renewed purpose. With only twelve spots available\, this class offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a supportive environment where your passion for nature and art flourishes. \n See class supply list below. \n\nFees: Member $289\, Non-Member $356 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Botanical Drawing: Mixed Media Explorations
DESCRIPTION:This three-session studio intensive is a deep dive into color relationships — observing\, interpreting\, and marking with greater fluidity than you’ve allowed yourself before. Working with graphite\, watercolor washes\, and colored pencil\, you’ll slow down and study the nuances of hue\, value\, and light that everyday looking skips past entirely. Color asks more of the eye than greyscale ever does: every hue carries its own inherent value\, and nothing renders true until that relationship is actually seen — through sustained\, focused attention\, which is in itself a visual art technique. Join me as we study early December light — remarkably different from late winter\, early spring\, even summer. Sessions move between indoors and the field\, weather permitting\, so dress for the season. Specimens are chosen collaboratively\, discussed ahead of each session\, with an emphasis on working from life: continuing to deepen our connection to the natural world through mark-making. Expect a relaxed\, experimental\, inquiry-based studio — space to explore your own artistic voice as you continue to deepen it. A pre-class study page exercise gets your pencil miles back up before session one; details in the supply list. This class is designed to be taken more than once: each offering rotates seasonal subjects and media emphasis. \n See prerequisites and class supply list below. \n\nFees: Member $231\, Non-Member $284 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
