SUMMARY:Arranging to a Prompt: Designing with Intention & Imagination
DESCRIPTION:A big part of floral design is arranging to a space\, a theme\, or a color palette — but what if the inspiration began with a single unexpected prompt? In Arranging to a Prompt\, participants will receive a creative cue — and translate it into a floral composition. The focus is not on replicating a look\, but on interpreting meaning. In this class you’ll evolve from simply arranging flowers… to communicating with them. Instructor: Kate Hugo Vernon \n\nFees: Member $77\, Non-Member $96 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact registrar@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Creating a Sense of Depth in Illustrations: Methods and Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Harmonious composition\, precise outline\, and accurate shading have immense importance as components of a great illustration. However\, conveying a good sense of depth is not secondary at all. Every artist eventually faces the challenge of having to deal with the nuisance of a flat result – meaning lack of perspective or three-dimensionality. \nThe solution might reside in subtle (or oftentimes quite conspicuous) aspects already present in the very subject portrayed\, which require more detailed attention. But in many other instances\, one may need to resort to artistic tricks\, optical artifacts\, or else inspiration stemming from other sources of knowledge and from the domains of different media. \nHence\, one can\, for example\, get from photography and optics the idea of different focus ranges for rendering variation of edge sharpness. By observing landscapes and distances\, one can draw inspiration to use the effect of atmospheric perspective and represent the proper scale of contrasts and neatness. Combining a few or all of those diverse resorts is also an option\, so that the different challenges can be cleverly sorted and all possible solutions reconciled. \nIn this course\, we will study the theory and the empirics behind those methods\, examine examples of masterful illustrations\, and mostly proceed to live demonstrations using graphite\, colored pencils\, and even a bit of pen and ink\, to explore and apply all the procedures available for the purpose of obtaining a convincing and eloquent sense of depth. Obs.: It is not mandatory that registrants employ the same media used in demonstrations. The students are free to utilize any other media they prefer. \nIn addition to the analytical approaches described above\, the classes provide extensive technical information and discussion of methods for achieving the best results across all media used. Classes are recorded and remain permanently available for all registrants. Students who need feedback on their practice will have an individual online meeting scheduled with the tutor. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $277\, Non-Member $346 \nAll programs are subject to change.

Each participant will leave with their finished reusable bag and the knowledge and inspiration to continue experimenting with botanical dye techniques at home. \nFees: Member $70\, Non-Member $88 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:PATHS AROUND THE GLASS: A TOUR OF RESILIENT BEAUTY: JULY 21
DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the Conservatory and tour the new Garden areas added as part of the Conservatory expansion. “Paths Around the Glass” is a guided outdoor tour that showcases the plants that can not only thrive in Richmond’s climate\, but are designed to provide food and shelter for insects and wildlife. You will discover the adaptive design techniques used to create the varied areas around the conservatory\, including: a hillside garden\, a parterre meadow\, a new courtyard for gatherings\, and aquatic plants and paths around the new lake area. As you go through the spaces\, you will discover a rich variety of plants that are primarily native and are well-suited for this environment from evergreens to hardy perennials that return each year. The landscape is designed for resilience\, transitioning from formal irrigated garden beds to more natural environments that rely on drought-tolerant and self-sustaining plantings that can thrive throughout the year. This tour will begin on the steps at the entrance to the Conservatory. Enter through the Visitors Center and check in with Guest Services prior to the tour.          \nALL TOURS ARE NOW OFFERED AS DROP-IN ONLY AND DO NOT REQUIRE REGISTRATION. SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike! Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course with Dr. Douglas DeBerry is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. \nFees: Member: $152\, Non-Member: $190 \nAll programs are subject to change.
