SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Community Science events like the Great Backyard Bird Count are important sources of information as we look at global warming and its effect on nature. The next Great Backyard Bird Count is February 14-17\, 2025\, and takes place all across America in thousands of communities. Bird watchers of all ages count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are. Here at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, we’ll be counting birds (and you can help too!) on Feb 17th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  All are welcome to participate in this exciting community event! \nGrab your binoculars\, drop by the Lora Robins Library for a checklist\, and meet some organizations that promote birding. Be a part of this community science project; children can assist\, too\, and are welcome to help with a parent. \nGoldfinch at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Photo by Tom Hennessy \n

SUMMARY:Multicolored and Pattern-colored objects rendered in colored pencils
DESCRIPTION:Different colors in the same object make it so exuberant that their appeal can easily catch the viewer’s attention\, hence the subtle shades and volume can often be bypassed or missed. Besides\, the profusion of visual information is at times so overwhelming that the artist may get confused as to how to start. To clarify and make these issues simpler\, this course provides a logical examination of the object through a step-by-step process that eliminates the perceptual noise\, focusing on one aspect at a time. This procedure evolves in degrees\, starting with the rendition of the most evident traits and gradually progressing toward the most complex and subtle. \nWe will employ colored pencils (water or oil/wax-based\, according to each student’s preference) on white and toned paper. Although color pencil is the technique chosen for this course\, all the principles addressed apply other color techniques like watercolor\, acrylic\, oil\, gouache\, or even digital illustration. \nIt is recommended that students have a good practical understanding of analytical drawing and the fundamentals for perceiving and representing light and shade. These skills\, however\, are not required to have come from formal courses\, but the teacher also accepts anyone with self-taught abilities on that subject matter. Students can self-assess their skills and freely decide to enroll. \nThis course is a good complement to Rogério’s January class entitled “Translating Colors into Grayscale Values”\, which works as an in-depth introduction to the subjects addressed in this class\, but enrolling in one does not require enrolling in both. \nThis virtual course is led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo. Recordings of each class will be permanently available to students. \nFees: Member $185\, Non-Member $222 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact MeganC@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x320 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Beyond Birding for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Ready to explore more about birds and birdwatching? Join Barb and Buz Sawyer\, avid birdwatchers\, in exploring a little deeper into this fascinating past-time. Perhaps you can already identify several common species (at least the males!) and have a pair of binoculars\, but you want to expand your skills. Sometimes you hear the bird\, but can’t see it. Sometimes it just flies too quickly to get a good look. The males are often easy to identify\, but those females can be hard. And sometimes those “little brown jobs” can be downright frustrating. Tools\, techniques\, and equipment will be shared\, as well as discussing bird behavior\, habitats and conservation. Weather permitting\, we will visit different habitats within the Garden. \nBring your stories and your questions! Barb will share photos of some of the places they have traveled on birdwatching adventures and Buz will talk about keeping a life list (his includes almost 500 species!). \nFees: Member $40\, Non-Member $48 \nAll programs are subject to change. SUMMARY:Singularity is a Forest
DESCRIPTION:Experience Singularity is a Forest\, a photography series by Álvaro Alejandro López\, a self-taught photographer from Mexico City. López’s photography invites viewers to explore the spaces between what is seen and what is felt. His images challenge us to look beyond the surface\, revealing connections between seemingly unrelated objects and moments. Each photograph serves as a mirror\, reflecting both the visible and the hidden\, inviting the observer to dive deeper into a world where every fragment contributes to a greater\, unspoken narrative. In Singularity is a Forest\, an aesthetic approach to the features and scars that give life to the individuality of each tree\, Álvaro’s photographs are accompanied by his poetry as well.
