SUMMARY:Fall Florals in the Victorian Style
DESCRIPTION:Victorian florals were often full\, lush\, and created with materials from their gardens. Grace Arents (1848 – 1926) loved gardening\, and left her property to be a botanical garden in memory of her uncle\, Lewis Ginter. As a tribute to Grace\, we remember the centennial anniversary of her passing with beautiful arrangements made from garden and florist materials. Bring a water-tight urn or compote (at least 3” deep) for your arrangement. To stay authentic to the time period\, we will not be using floral foam for our arrangements. Participants may want to bring a box or some type of container to transport their arrangements home. \nNote: This class has a higher floral budget to create the lavish Victorian-style arrangements. \nFees: Member $104\, Non-Member $129 \nAll programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required. \nLewis Ginter Botanical Garden strives to be a Garden for all and we are committed to offering diverse adult learning opportunities that are inclusive and accessible to all learners. If you would like to request an accommodation to support your participation in an adult learning opportunity at the Garden\, please contact registrar@lewisginter.org or call 804-262-9887 x328 and we will make our best effort to help.

SUMMARY:Art in Bloom: Art Nouveau Floral Design
DESCRIPTION:Discover the elegance and beauty of the Art Nouveau movement through floral design. Inspired by the period’s graceful\, flowing lines and celebration of nature\, participants will explore how artists and designers incorporated the organic forms of flowers\, vines\, and garden plants into their work. \nThis class also honors Grace Arents (1848 – 1926)\, whose love of gardening and vision helped shape the legacy of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Arents bequeathed her property to become a botanical garden in memory of her uncle\, Lewis Ginter. As we commemorate the centennial of her passing\, we celebrate her passion for horticulture through beautiful floral arrangements created from both garden and florist-grown materials. \nFollowing a brief lecture and discussion on the history and defining characteristics of Art Nouveau\, participants will design a floral arrangement featuring soft\, pastel blooms and natural\, flowing forms that reflect the style’s distinctive aesthetic while paying tribute to Grace Arents’s enduring appreciation for gardens and floral beauty. No prior floral design experience is required. \nFees: Member $79\, Non-Member $98 \nAll programs are subject to change. \n

SUMMARY:Botanical Drawing II: Shading & Structure
DESCRIPTION:You’ve built a strong foundation in Botanical Drawing I\, learning to see\, structure\, and create form using only line. Now\, it’s time to expand your understanding of depth and dimension by exploring light\, shadow\, and value. \nThis course takes the next step in your artistic journey\, sharpening your ability to see subtle shifts in light and shadow while deepening your focus and observational skills. Using graphite\, you’ll explore grayscale rendering and value mapping\, learning to blend smooth transitions between highlights\, midtones\, and shadows\, resulting in refined\, visually rich botanical drawings that convey structure and realism. \nNature remains our greatest teacher. Together\, we’ll observe how light sculpts botanical forms\, sketch directly from life\, and refine our understanding of contrast. You’ll create a personal value finder\, experiment with artistic tools\, and gain confidence in shading in a supportive\, engaging environment where curiosity and practice make learning fun. \nNow that you’ve learned to build form with line alone\, you’ll be adding another layer of understanding with expert guidance and feedback along the way. \nLet’s keep growing — one line\, one shadow\, one discovery at a time!

SUMMARY:Plant Identification: Tools and Techniques for Identifying Native and Naturalized Plants in the Mid-Atlantic Region
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an in-depth overview of the tools and techniques used by botanists to identify plants to the species level\, with a strong emphasis on family characteristics. Attendees will learn how to use the diversity of resources available – including field guides\, apps\, AI\, and technical manuals – to answer the question: “What is that species?” More importantly\, they will learn how to use dichotomous keys to verify their identifications – the most critical step in plant ID. With this class\, you will learn not only how to get an answer\, but also how to know that you got it right! An important focus of the course will be on empowering attendees to “dismantle” the seemingly endless complex of scientific terminology surrounding plant identification.
