UCI Road World Championships Information

  • The 2014 event was held in Richmond, Virginia, the site of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships. Courses were set throughout the city including a downtown criterium.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is honored to be the start venue for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships. Here’s what you need to know if attending the race or visiting the Garden during the event.

SEPT. 19-20 SCHEDULE

Saturday, September 19: Team Time Trial Training 9 a.m. to noon.  Lakeside Avenue northbound will be closed 8 a.m. to no later than 1 p.m. Garden open; regular admission; Garden hours 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Sunday, September 20:  Women’s Team Time Trial: 11:30 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. Men’s Team Time Trial: 1:30 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.  Lakeside Avenue northbound will be closed  10 a.m. to no later than 4:30 p.m. Admission to the Garden will be free on this day only; Garden hours 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Lakeside Avenue southbound  will be closed between the Garden’s main gate and Jefferson Lakeside Country Club from 10 a.m. Friday, September 18 –  midnight on Sunday, September 20. ***Please note that no parking will be available on site for Garden visitors on Saturday or Sunday, September 19-20.

STREET CLOSURES

The start gate will be built across Lakeside Avenue just north of the Garden’s entrance. This means Lakeside Avenue (southbound only) will be closed between the Garden’s main gate and Jefferson Lakeside Country Club from 10 a.m. Friday, September 18 –  midnight on Sunday, September 20.

Lakeside Avenue closings: Saturday, Sept. 19: 8 a.m. to no later than 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 20: 10 a.m. to no later than 4:35 p.m.

LAKESIDE AREA FAN ZONES (Sept. 20 Only)

Featuring water stations, port-a-johns, trash and recycling receptacles, and an information table. The entire length of Lakeside Avenue (from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to Bryan Park) will be great for viewing the race, with three Fan Zones located along the way, as well as numerous businesses and restaurants (Lakeside map).

*Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (1800 Lakeside Avenue): Also includes a jumbotron with a live feed of the race, food & drink available for purchase both Saturday and Sunday, bicycle valet Saturday and Sunday,  information table. FREE Garden admission on Sept. 20 (only).

*Lakeside Avenue/Lakeside Farmers Market (6110 Lakeside Avenue): Food & drink available for purchase both Saturday & Sunday; there are a limited number of bike racks at the Farmer’s Market. A limited number of bleachers will be set up in front of the Lawrence Building (6924 Lakeside Avenue) on Sunday.

FOOD & DRINK 

The Garden will have several dining options and a beer garden within view of the cyclists, both Saturday and Sunday.

TRANSPORTATION & PARKING

Due to road closures, we do not recommend driving  to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden during the UCI Road World Championships. The main gate to the Garden will be closed to vehicular traffic Saturday, September 19 & Sunday, September 20 and there will be no regular guest parking available inside the Garden on both days. Biking or walking to the UCI Roads World Championships  is encouraged. Richmond 2015 will provide a Bicycle Valet at the Garden (limited space). See the World’s Pedestrian Cyclist Guide for details.

Saturday Sept. 19th: SHUTTLE — A Richmond 2015 shuttle will run from the Anthem Office (2015 Staples Mill Road, near the intersection of Staples Mill and Broad) to the corner of Lakeside Avenue and Hilliard Road, near the Garden’s entrance (times TBA).  Cost for parking at Anthem is $10 and must be prepaid/reserved in advance using the “Click and Park” app. Shuttle is free.

Limited Parking — There is parking around the Lakeside Business District, however, these spots will fill quickly and may be affected by road closures. Space to park and walk or bike at your own risk is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the GRTC Glenside Park and Ride (4100 Glenside Drive), approximately 1.5 miles from the intersection of Lakeside and Hilliard.

GRTC is offering a one-time special event pass for Worlds good for unlimited rides (valid September 18–28). Please note there will be detour routing and alternate stops.

Taking the Train? Your Bike Can Come Too! Amtrak’s Staples Mill Station is nearby and will be offering walk-up checked bike service on select trains from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Washington, D.C. or Alexandria from September 15 – 30. *Reservations Required
