CULTIVATING THE CREATIVE PROCESS
OF BOTANICAL ART

This course teaches students about the various tools, resources and creative processes visual artists have traditionally and contemporarily adopted to create botanical art. This is a unique opportunity for students to explore what they learn through their sketchbooks by engaging in a variety of creative processes and experiencing them firsthand. During this course, students will gain a deep understanding of the creative path as well as a deeper understanding of ‘the art of botanical illustration’ and ‘the art of being an artist.’ Students can expect their own creative process to be influenced by what they learn and to find inspiration in the journey of studying the natural world through an artist’s eyes.

A variety of mediums will be used in this class. Lectures, group discussions, writing and sketching exercises will provide students with the structure and opportunity to explore creative ideas and approaches rooted in traditional and contemporary techniques to their botanical studies. Instructors: Claudette and Stephey Baker.

To provide ongoing support to students, tips and techniques studios are scheduled throughout the year. Don’t miss the first two studios scheduled for February 3 and April 20, 2024.

*This course offers 10 hours elective credit toward the Garden Education Series: Botanical Illustration Certificate. Only students who are enrolled in the certificate program may register for this class.

Supplies: Please bring a sketchbook with you to class. Please note that the Garden is not providing any materials for this studio. Students are responsible for supplying their own materials.

Pre-Requisite: Intermediate Drawing for Botanical Illustration.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Stephey Baker is an artist specializing in pen and ink, watercolor, color theory, and graphic design for the professional artist community. Her lifelong connection to nature led her to botanical illustration, with a special interest in pollinating insects and the plants that nurture them. Stephey obtained her botanical illustration certificate at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. She believes in cultivating a curious spirit and finds joy in teaching others how to easily connect to their artistic side. Stephey lives in Church Hill with her rescued cats and dogs and tends to an urban garden full of life. In her favorite dreams, she can talk to Bumble Bees. Learn more at markedbythemuse.com

Claudette Baker comes from a long lineage of artists and has lived her life as a student and teacher of various artistic practices. She taught art to children, served as a guest artist at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, and is a graduate of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s botanical illustration program. Claudette’s favorite medium is pencil, both color and graphite. She is a free spirit who accepts all with open arms.
