DEEP DIVE WITH AQUATIC PLANTSEXPLORE, LEARN, AND TAKE HOME LIVING PLANTS!

Step into the world of aquatic plants with this immersive, hands on course led by the Garden’s aquatic expert Danny Cox. Whether you’re a water garden beginner or simply fascinated by ponds and plant filled ecosystems, this session delivers an insider’s view into the beauty and diversity of aquatic species. You’ll learn what makes aquatic plants unique, how different categories behave, and how to recognize them in the wild and in cultivated gardens. After a short lecture, head outdoors for a guided exploration through the Garden’s water features to see these plants up close. A major highlight: Participants will take home a curated packet of information AND cuttings from select aquatic plants in the Garden’s collections—perfect for starting or expanding a water garden of your own. Spaces are limited for this unique plant focused deep dive. Register early to secure your spot!

Event Details

Please be prepared to spend time outside for a tour. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen if needed. If you are interested in cuttings bring something that can protect your vehicle from getting wet (i.e. 5 gallon bucket, plastic shoe bin, small tarp, etc.)

About the Instructor

A leader in public horticulture for more than a decade, Danny Cox oversees the Horticulture Department, setting the vision for the curation, growth, and maintenance of botanical collections. He combines lifelong passions for plants and people by creating innovative landscape displays that inspire and delight visitors and celebrate Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s diverse membership.

Danny received his Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and is a graduate of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce Associate Leadership Development Program, as well as the Strategic Leaders Program at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. He honed his expertise in garden construction, maintenance, layout, and design at the Naples Botanical Garden in Florida, rising through the ranks to Senior Horticulture Manager.

Danny has also served on the Board of Directors of the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society and the Naples Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. Most recently, Danny completed the Longwood Fellows Program, a prestigious leadership development program for public garden professionals which included a field placement with the Singapore National Parks Board.

While Danny has a strong knowledge of many aspects of horticulture and public gardens, he specializes in aquatic and tropical plants. His work with the waterlily collection at Naples Botanical Garden was featured in Better Homes and Gardens. As a new resident to the Mid-Atlantic Region, Danny is excited to explore all Richmond and its surrounding natural areas have to offer.
