Soul for Soil
“Soul for Soil” is an artistic exploration of the profound, historical, and spiritual connection between African American culture and the natural world. This exhibit delves into the deep-rooted relationship with the earth—one that is both ancestral and contemporary, shaped by resilience, creativity, and renewal.
Through the lens of spring, a season of rebirth and transformation, the works in this collection reflect the cyclical journey of growth, healing, and liberation. They honor the land as a witness to African American stories—fields tilled with labor and love, gardens nurtured by generations, and spaces where spirits find solace and strength. Each piece in “Soul for Soil” celebrates the enduring ties to the earth, not only as a source of sustenance but as a sacred space for reclaiming identity, finding belonging, and sowing seeds of future possibilities.
By reconnecting to nature and embracing the vitality of spring, this exhibit invites viewers to consider how the land carries deep meaning to our past and continues to shape our collective future.
