The 2026 biennial Botanical Illustration exhibit Seeing Nature features 35 botanical artworks in graphite, watercolor, colored pencil, and mixed media submitted by students, graduates, and instructors of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Botanical Illustration Certificate Program. The title of this year’s exhibit refers to students’ practice of not merely looking at but truly observing and admiring plant life in all its richness.

The certificate program involves a rigorous course of study beginning with a series of three introductory botanical drawing courses. Students progress to Botany for Botanical Illustration, Pen and Ink, Color Mixing, Composition, Introduction to Watercolor, and Colored Pencil. Advanced courses include Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor along with Advanced Colored Pencil. These core classes are supplemented by a wide variety of electives designed to challenge and inspire students. Each certificate culminates with a final portfolio presentation and review, bringing the botanical illustration community together for reflection and celebration of students’ achievements.
