INTRODUCTION TO
Botanical Drawing III

In Part III of the introductory botanical drawing series, you continue to draw inspiration from nature while building on the foundations established in Parts I and II. You deepen your observational skills, refine your interpretations, and develop greater precision in your drawing. This course guides you in translating what you observe into marks on paper, creating the illusion of form and cultivating a deliberate drawing practice. You study both natural and artificial light, exploring how light direction and color temperature influence depth, realism, and form. Through guided exercises, you refine your graphite shading techniques, sharpen your artistic eye, and create small color-matching studies using colored pencils. As the course unfolds, you engage in shared learning experiences that inspire growth and exploration. Regular interaction and feedback help you gain new perspectives, refine your techniques, and strengthen your foundation for continued artistic development. By the end, you complete a more developed drawing and build confidence as an artist—ready to carry your creative practice forward with renewed purpose. With only twelve spots available, this class offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a supportive environment where your passion for nature and art flourishes.

GES: BI, 20, required*

*This class is required for the new Botanical Illustration Certificate program and provides 20 hours of credit.

Prerequisites: Completion of Botanical Drawing I & II (classroom hours and projects). Additional workshops and one-on-one tutoring are available for extra hands-on time. If you’re unsure about your readiness, your instructor is here to help.

Students are responsible for bringing all materials listed on the supply list. The instructor will provide live specimens and shared studio materials. Dress for the weather and walking in the Garden. Before class, please review the supply list and the two short articles included there about lighting. They’ll help you start noticing how light, color, and shadow change throughout the day. You don’t need to study — just stay curious. Spend a few minutes observing morning, afternoon, and evening light, and bring a quick sketch or note from your observations to share.

Bring your curiosity, sketchbook, and love of nature. Come ready to draw, explore, and connect with peers in a supportive, creative environment.

Class Environment: encourages experimentation, group discussions, and inquisitiveness
Homework: 5+ hours a week (varies with participant)
Note: Due to limited class time, each participant must realize that additional drawing time outside of the classroom is necessary to acquire the skills taught.
Participants pursuing the Garden’s Botanical Art certificate are expected to complete all projects and make-up any absences before continuing their drawing studies.

Stephey Baker

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Stephey Baker is an artist specializing in pen and ink, watercolor, color theory, and graphic design for the professional artist community. Her lifelong connection to nature led her to botanical illustration, with a special interest in pollinating insects and the plants that nurture them. Stephey obtained her botanical illustration certificate at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. She believes in cultivating a curious spirit and finds joy in teaching others how to easily connect to their artistic side. Stephey lives in Church Hill with her rescued cats and dogs and tends to an urban garden full of life. In her favorite dreams, she can talk to Bumble Bees. Learn more at markedbythemuse.com

 

Claudette BakerClaudette Baker comes from a long lineage of artists and has lived her life as a student and teacher of various artistic practices. She taught art to children, served as a guest artist at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, and is a graduate of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s botanical illustration program. Claudette’s favorite medium is pencil, both color and graphite. She is a free spirit who accepts all with open arms. As a teacher, she encourages students to learn the basics as the first step in their journey to find their own style and voice. You can follow her on Instagram @claudette_baker.
